Matthew Lewellen enters his third year with the University of Mary Wrestling Coaching Staff during the 2018-2019 season. As the Head Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator, Lewellen leads in recruiting activities, camp operations, and assists in all other facets of the program’s operations. Lewellen helped coach the Marauders to their best Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference finish and a 2018 NCAA Division II All-American (Jared Reis). During the 2017-18 season, the Marauders also swept the NSIC conference awards including Freshman of the Year (Phillip Springsteen), Wrestler of the Year (Tate Barnhardt), & Coach of the Year (Adam Aho).
 
As a prep athlete, Lewellen competed for Poway High School in Poway, California. During Lewellen’s tenure at Poway High, they won a state team title in 2005 and were runner-ups at the CIF State Championships in 2006 & 2007. During his college tenure, Lewellen was a 2-time CCCAA state placer for Palomar Community College (6th in 2010 & 3rd in 2011). Following his time at Palomar, he continued his athletic and academic career with Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) where he competed at 197 lbs & 184 lbs. Lewellen was a 4-year college captain and starter for the Comets and Dragons.
 
Upon completion of his collegiate wrestling career, Lewellen began his coaching career in the fall of 2014 at his alma mater MSUM where he helped coach a NCAA Division II All-American (Blake Bosch). Following the 2014-15 season, Lewellen joined the West Fargo Packer’s coaching staff where he helped the Packers to a runner-up team finish along with five North Dakota Class A state champions and two additional placers.
Lewellen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) and a Masters of Education with an Emphasis on Physical Education and Athletic Administration from the University of Mary.
