An All-America and the all-time leading scorer at Carleton College plus a former professional basketball player in Iceland, Zach Johnson is the newest member of the University of Mary men’s basketball coaching staff. Johnson is a graduate assistant coach for the Marauders who joined the program for the 2011-12 season.
Johnson was a team captain at Carleton College, where he posted 2,029 points in his career (2005-09). A three-time all-conference performer, he was the 2009 MIAC Conference Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player after averaging 23 points a game. Johnson averaged 20 points per game as a junior. As a freshman, Carleton qualified for the NCAA national tournament.
In addition to basketball, Johnson also earned two football letters at Carleton, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 2009.
Following graduation, Johnson travelled to Reykjavik, Iceland, where he played professionally for the Fjolnir Basketball Club for five months in 2009.
Johnson comes to U-Mary with several previous coaching experiences. He was an assistant varsity basketball coach at Burnsville (MN) High School, served as an assistant camp director at the Trent Tucker Basketball Camp, and was a developmental instructor for the Minnesota School of Basketball.
