With over three decades of coaching collegiate football, including eight seasons as an offensive coordinator at NCAA FBS programs, Dave Schramm joined the Marauders coaching staff prior to the 2023 season.
Schramm has coached in 13 bowl games and 10 playoff games at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. He has also been a part of eight conference championship teams. Most recently before joing UMary, Schramm was the offensive coordinator at IMG Academy in (2021-22), the running backs coach at Utah State (2020), and the offensive coordinator at Weber State (2018-19), helping the Wildcats to a 21-7 overall mark and 14-2 conference record as they shared back-to-back Big Sky titles. In 2018, Weber State advanced to the FCS Playoff Quarterfinals and was ranked as high as third in the nation, its highest in school history.
In 2019, the Wildcats were again ranked as high as third in the nation and advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs for the first time in school history. During the 2019 season, Schramm coached five offensive players to all-Big Sky Conference honors, including running back Josh Davis, who earned All-America honors.Four Wildcats earned All-America honors under Schramm in 2018, while Davis won the Jerry Rice Award, which is annually awarded to the Most Outstanding Freshman at the FCS level.
Schramm spent four seasons (2012-15) as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State. In Schramm’s system, the Bulldogs ranked as one of the top offenses in the nation in several categories. Schramm also coached All-American and Oakland Raiders star Derek Carr for two seasons as Fresno State led the nation in passing and was third in the nation in total offense in 2013. Schramm was also a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2013, given to the nation’s top assistant coach.
In all, Schramm coached seven offensive players to the NFL and had three players earn All-American honors during his time at Fresno State, in addition to eight all-Mountain West first-team selections and 19 players that earned all-conference honors.
Prior to coaching at Fresno State, Schramm spent seven seasons (2005-11) as an assistant coach at the University of Utah, three of those alongside Andersen. He was the offensive coordinator with the Utes in 2009 and the co-offensive coordinator in 2010. Utah averaged 33.1 points per game in 2010 and 29.1 points per game in 2009. He also coached running backs, quarterbacks and tight ends and served as the recruiting coordinator during his time at Utah.
Schramm spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Montana. He coached the offensive line and tight ends for the Grizzlies and was part of the 2004 Montana team that finished 12-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA championship game.
Schramm spent 12 seasons coaching at San Diego State (1990-2001), where he was the recruiting coordinator, while also coaching the offensive line, safeties, tight ends and running backs. He also spent one season coaching at Southwest Texas State in 2002, where he was the assistant head coach and running backs coach.
A native of San Diego, Schramm was a college quarterback at Cornell (Iowa) and Grossmont Junior College before playing at Adams State in Colorado. As a freshman at Cornell, he led all of Division III in touchdown passes and helped the team to a No. 1 national ranking in total offense. His first coaching job was at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, where he was an assistant coach from 1984-87. He began his college coaching career at Austin Peay, where he coached running backs and tight ends. He was also a graduate assistant coach at Nebraska in 1989, where he coached the secondary.
Schramm graduated from San Diego State in 1988 with a physical education degree.
He is the father of twin sons, D.J. and Dusty.
