ACHA Division 1 Student-Athlete Academic Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for practice or competition, a student-athlete must be enrolled in at least a minimum of 12 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits.
To Maintain Eligibility for Competition, a student-athlete must:
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Enrolled in 12 progress toward degree credits dropping to no less than 9 per semester (AFTER Mid-Terms). Must pass 9 credits hours from Fall to Spring semester with a 2.00 GPA to remain eligible for Spring semester.
  • Have a minimum of 24 credits earned in the previous academic year and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 by the beginning of each Fall term. (First year players do not have to meet this requirement)
Progress Toward Degree Credits:
  • Any credits NOT required to graduate, are NOT considered progress toward degree credits, except for the following credits earned toward a minor exception:
    • A student-athlete may use a maximum of six credits earned toward a minor during the fall and spring terms to fulfill the credit-hour requirements listed above.
  • Required remedial courses must be taken during the first two full-time terms.
  • Repeated courses due to an unsatisfactory initial grade (W or F) will count as progress towards degree the second time taken upon satisfactory completion. Repeated courses for classes previously passed will not count as progress towards degree if re-taken to improve grade.
Sport Credit during the Student-Athlete Competition Season:
  • A student-athlete receives 1 PED credit during the semester that they are competing for a total of 4 credits during their playing career. Example: 
    • PED 100 Freshman season
    • PED 200 Sophomore season
    • PED 300 Junior season
    • PED 400 Senior season
  • The section that needs to be added will depend on which sport the student-athlete is involved in.
  • NOTE: ACHA Hockey allows 5 years of eligibility but UMary only allows 4 Sport Credits
Virtue in Sport Courses:
  • A student-athlete will take a 1 credit Virtue in Sport course in their off-season semester. Example:
    • PED 117 Freshman and first year transfers off-season
    • PED 217 Sophomore off-season
    • PED 317 Junior off-season
    • PED 417 Virtuous Leadership (*optional*)
NOTE: Transfer student-athletes will take PED 117 their first off season. Upon completion of PED 117, they follow the usual sequence of Virtue in Sport PED courses: PED 117, PED 217, PED 317, optional-PED 417.

Men's Cross Country
Women's Cross Country
Softball
Baseball
Men's Basketball
Women's Basketball
Women's Golf
Men's Golf
Swimming and Diving
Tennis
Wrestling
 
The following Sports typically take their Virtue in Sport class/credit in the SPRING:
Hockey
Volleyball
Soccer
Sporting Clays
Football
 
 *Exceptions to the above need to be approved by Fr. Wolf*
