PHOENIX – Facing the team directly behind #11 University of Mary in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division 1 preseason coaches' poll, the visiting Marauders routed #12 Grand Canyon University 7-3 in the season-opener for both teams.
Dain Sardelli led the UMary (1-0) efforts with a pair of goals and an assist. The Marauders forward gave UMary a quick lead just 33 seconds into the game. Picking up a loose puck just outside the Marauders blue line, Sardelli scored on a breakaway.
Three minutes later Sardelli started an end-to-end rush. Standing in front of the net,
John Lang redirected a long blast from Sardelli into the net for a 2-0 lead.
The Lopes (0-1) followed with two straight goals to pull even at 12:50 of the first period.
The Marauders regained control of the game with four straight goals.
Kaeden Krieg needed just 58 seconds to regain the lead for UMary and
Hunter Mangan doubled the Marauders advantage to 4-2 with 18 seconds left in the first.
Andrew Brubakken grew the UMary lead to 5-2 79 seconds into the second period before
Crae Dawson finished the Marauders run with a goal at 9:26.
The two teams both tallied in the third. Sardelli closed out the scoring with 1:03 to play in the game.
Brubakken, Krieg and Mangan all had a goal and an assist.
Nick Bradshaw also had a multi-point game with two assists.
Caleb Cross finished with 39 saved for UMary.
The Lopes finished with a 42-41 edge in shots and was 1-for-6 on the power play. UMary came up empty on six opportunities with a man advantage as both teams were whistled for six minor penalties.
The Marauders continue their stay in Phoenix with a game at Arizona State University at 8 pm CST on Monday, September 21. UMary then heads to The Last Frontier for exhibition games against NCAA Division I programs University of Alaska Fairbanks on Friday, September 25, and the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, September 26.
