BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary paired an early goal with outstanding defense to earn a 1-0 victory over visiting Concordia-St. Paul.
The Marauders started fast in UMary's Northern Sun home opener.
Dina Polanco, the Marauders leading goal scorer, wedged herself between a pair of defenders to track down a long forward pass from
Bella Kozlowski. Off the bounce from just outside the goal box, Polanco beat the Golden Bears to the ball and blasted a one-timer into the left side of the net at 14:28.
Alex Guinn also picked up an assist on the goal.
Polanco now has six goals on the season.
UMary goalkeeper
Kadyn Dilger and the Marauders defenders took over the rest of the game. Dilger made two saves – both in the second half – to earn her first clean sheet of the season.
The Marauders held a 10-4 edge in shots and 4-2 advantage in shots on frame 4-2. CSP took one more corner kick than UMary 4-3.
UMary improved to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears, selected to finish second in the NSIC preseason coaches' poll, is 2-1-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the NSIC.
The Marauders close the weekend out with a visit from Winona State University on Sunday, September 20. Game time on Youth Soccer Player Appreciation Day is 2 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
