MINOT, ND – The University of Mary softball team (10-22, 0-10 Northern Sun) struggled in their first day at the Minot Air-Supported Dome, dropping a doubleheader 8-2, 7-0 to the University of Minnesota Duluth (19-14, 4-6 NSIC).
The Marauders return to Minot, ND, to compete against Bemidji State University in a doubleheader at 2 pm.
GAME 1 University of Mary 2 UMD 8
UMD would strike early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning and adding two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
The Marauders got on the board with one run in the top of the fifth inning. Claire Tompkins roped a pinch hit single up the middle to score Ariane Sims, who was pinch running for Francesca Villaneda.
The Bulldogs responded with one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead. UMary wouldn't go down without a fight as Genevieve Hastings blasted her team-leading third home run of the season over the center field wall in the seventh inning. The Marauders wouldn't add another run and fell 8-2.
The UMary pitching staff of Camryn Fuessel, Jayleen Rojas, and Ivee Johnsen combined for eight strikeouts against UMD. The Marauders finished the game with three hits and four walks, while the Bulldogs had nine hits and nine walks.

Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-2 with one home run, one RBI, one run scored, and one walk.
Claire Tompkins went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Jenel Mallari went 0-for-1 with two walks.
Ariana Retuta went 1-for-3.
GAME 2 University of Mary 0 UMD 7
UMary fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. UMD would add another three runs in the third inning and one in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
Elyssa Verploegen came in relief in the fifth inning and allowed one run, while striking out three Bulldogs. Cassidy Bagnell and Jenel Mallari both reached on singles in the fifth inning, but UMD's defense prevented the Marauders from scoring any runs when Emma Ambroz threw out Bagnell at third.
Despite a Genevieve Hastings walk in the seventh inning, UMary failed to score and lost 7-0 to UMD. The Marauders posted four hits and one walk, while the Bulldogs had seven hits and three walks. Arria Johnson and Verploegen combined for six strikeouts.
