Marauders break season win record in sweep of Beavers

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary baseball team concluded their 2026 home schedule in memorable fashion, sweeping Bemidji State University to break the school record for wins in a season. The Marauders also extended their win streak to nine games with 3-2 and 7-5 to set a new NCAA era record for consecutive wins.

The Marauders previous record for wins in a season was 30 in 2002. The win streak mark was eight in 2002. UMary also increased its record for Northen Sun wins in a season to 25.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Marauders are 32-15 overall and 25-9 in the Northern Sun. UMary is currently third in the NSIC standings and is guaranteed a top-3 finish in the league. The Marauders previous best finish was sixth place in 2021.

The Beavers fall to 9-35 overall and 6-26 in the NSIC.

In final preparation for the NSIC tournament, UMary visits St. Cloud State University for a 3-game series on Friday and Saturday, May 1-2. Friday's doubleheader begins at 1:30 pm with a single game Saturday slated to start at 12 noon. The NSIC tournament is May 6-9 in Sioux Falls, SD.

GAME 1: University of Mary 3 Bemidji State University 2
Ryan Chamberlain and Cole Smith combined forces to deliver the Marauders their school-record 31st victory, striking out nine Beavers in seven innings.

Afte picking up a save on Saturday, Chamberlain was back on the hill three days later and struck out eight hitters in six innings. The senior righthander held the Beavers attack to just one run and seven hits.

Despite allowing baserunners in four of the first five innings, the product of Laramie, WY, kept the Beavers off the scoreboard until Hunter Hyden led off the sixth inning with a home run. BSU added two more baserunners in the inning but Chamberlain slammed the door before turning the game over to Smith for the seventh inning.

The Beavers touched Smith for a run and moved the tying run to second before the sophomore righty closed out the game by striking out Matt Filippi to earn his seventh save.

Chamberlain earned the win and improved to 5-1 this season.

Hot-hitting Mikey Ramirez had a hand in all the Marauders scoring. After hitting two home runs and a double last week, Ramirez scored the first run of the game in the third on a base hit by Marcus Butts.

In the fourth, Ramirez lined a 2-out bases loaded single to score Bryce Leafgren and Cullen Wilson to give the Marauders a 3-0 advantage.

Butts and Cru Walker both posted a pair of hits. Leafgren doubled for UMary's only extra base hit.

GAME 2 UMary 7 BSU 5
In another closely contested contest, Hank Griffin scored three runs and drove in one before reliever Sam Hayen dominated the end of the game in a 7-5 UMary win.

The Beavers ambushed the Marauders with three runs in the first, headlined by a Matt Filippi 2-run home run.

UMary responded by scoring the next six runs in support of Michael Fagerland. After a rugged opening inning, the redshirt freshman quickly righted the ship and followed with four straight shutout innings to win a second start and pick up his third win of the season.

Griffin started the UMary rally by leading off the bottom of the first with a walk before scoring on a Bemidji State error. The UMary shortstop next opened the third inning with a double and scored on an Isaac Pegors double down the left field line. Pegors soon scored on another BSU error to tie the game at 3-3.

Griffin provided the Marauders their first lead in game two by singling home Mikey Ramirez in the fourth. With two outs and no one on base, the UMary centerfielder singled to center and stole second before scoring on the Griffin base hit. A Butts single moved Griffin to third, where he scored on a Pegors single to left. Leafgren then doubled to left to keep the train moving, scoring Butts with the third run of the inning.

In the sixth the Beavers closed the gap to 6-5 as Hunter Hyden led off with a home run and a UMary error set up a second BSU run.

The Marauders bullpen then took control, finishing the game with three scoreless innings.

In the eighth, with two outs and the tying run on second, Hayen entered the game and eliminated the Beavers threat with a strikeout as Steven Koscielniak swung and missed at three straight pitches. In the ninth Hayen punched out the first hitter before generating a fly ball out and a ground out to close the game and earn his second save.

Griffin had a double among his two hits, scored three times and drove in a run. Butts had three hits and scored twice. Kieran Gaffney posted three hits, drove in a run and was also hit by a pitch to reach base four times. Pegors, Leafgren and Ramirez all had two hits.

Fagerland struck out five and walked one in five innings.

Hyden had three hits for BSU.
