Marauders sweep Jimmies in renewal of old rivalry

JAMESTOWN, ND – The University of Mary completed a baseball season sweep of North Dakota Northern Sun rivals with a road sweep at the University of Jamestown. The Marauders rallied for a 10-7 win in the opener and followed with a 15-3 thrashing of the Jimmies in game two.

This was the first meeting between the Marauders and the Jimmies in two decades. The wins for UMary were the first over Jamestown since 2005.

UMary claimed wins in all three games against Highway 83 rival Minot State University in 2026 plus defeated the Jimmies in both games against the I-94 foe.

The Marauders, who set an NCAA program record for wins in a season earlier this week, are 27-15 overall. UMary is in third place in the Northern Sun with a record of 20-9. The Jimmies, who are in their first season competing in the NSIC, are 12-29 overall and 7-21 in league play.

UMary now returns home for an NSIC weekend series against Concordia-St. Paul (20-24, 15-17) on Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26. Saturday's doubleheader start time is 1:30 pm. Sunday is a 12 noon start for a single 9-inning game.

GAME 1 University of Mary 10 University of Jamestown
Scoring the first five and the last five runs of the game, visiting University of Mary rallied to down the University of Jamestown 10-7. Despite just six hits in the game, the Marauders posted double digit runs for the fifth time in nine games.

Mikey Ramirez paced the Marauders with a home run and a double. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Kieran Gaffney was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and a walk.

After loading the bases in the second, a Cru Walker ground ball scored one run with a Jimmies throwing error on the play allowing two more Marauders to score on the play for a quick 3-0 lead. Ramirez then drove the ball over the right field fence for a home run to cap a 5-run inning.

The Jimmies roared back in the fourth with a 3-run home run by Ben Patton keying a 5-run rally that tied the game between the two I-94 schools. Jamestown took its first lead of the day with two more runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-5.

Aggressive baserunning for UMary in the sixth closed the gap to a single run. Pinch-running for Mason Saint-Hilarie, who opened the inning with a walk, Andrew Linn took third on a single to right center by Kieran Gaffney. Linn scored when the Jimmies threw out Gaffney in an attempted steal of second.

Waiting until the last inning, the Marauders finished their comeback by scoring four runs on just two hits in the seventh. Ramirez led off with a double before a walk to Hank Griffin and Marcus Butts taking a pitch off his helmet loaded the bases. Reigning Northern Sun Player of the Week Isaac Pegors continued his torrid run at the plate, lashing a single to left to score two runs for an 8-7 UMary lead. The Marauders tacked on two more runs on a bases-loaded walk to Cullen Wilson and a passed ball.

The Jimmies made a run to get back into the game as the first three hitters in the bottom of the seventh reached base. Cole Smith then reverted to form, striking out the next two hitters before inducing a ground ball to second for the final out, leaving the bases full to earn his team-leading 5th save of the season.

Kaden Coldwell picked up his third win in three decisions with 1.1 scoreless innings. He struck out two and retired all four hitters he faced.

Coldwell entered the game in the fifth with two outs, the bases full and two runs already across the plate for the Jimmies. He immediately got a ground ball out to first base to end the inning without allowing any more damage.

GAME 2 University of Mary 15 University of Jamestown 3
A career-best performance by Michael Fagerland supported by a 15-run outburst for the Marauders guaranteed UMary a midweek sweep of Jamestown. A first-inning home run by Bryce Leafgren gave the Marauders a lead they would never relinquish in a 15-3 NSIC win over the Jimmies.

With Isaac Pegors on base following a walk, Leafgren blasted his 12th home run of the season to temporarily tie Pegors for the team lead in round trippers and give UMary a 2-0 lead.

A passed ball led to a Jimmies run in the home half of the first inning to cut the Marauders lead in half. UMary responded to the challenge by scoring six runs in the second to pull away from the Jimmies.

Kieran Gaffney led off with a double to right field and eventually score on a wild pitch. Marcus Butts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a second run. Pegors followed with a opposite field grand slam over the right field fence to score four and regain the team home run lead.

With Fagerland keeping the Jimmies offense in check, the Marauders tacked on three more in the fourth and two more in the sixth. A 2-run Butts blast over the center field fence closed the scoring for UMary and ensured the scheduled 9-inning game ended early.

Fagerland struck out eight in six innings – both career-bests – to pick up his second win without a loss this season. The redshirt freshman from Bismarck, ND, held the Jimmies to five hits and one earned run.

Pegors drove in five runs and scored three time on just one hit, his grand slam. Butts also scored three times, drove in three runs, and his only hit was a home run. Leafgren finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Hank Griffin posted a pair of hits and scored twice. Mikey Ramirez crossed the plate three times.

Grant Chapman hit a home run for the Jimmies.
