Marauders overwhelm Wildcats 16-4 to earn UMary series win

WAYNE, NE – Another overwhelming offensive onslaught earned the University of Mary baseball team a fourth straight weekend series win as the Marauders claimed a 16-4 victory at Wayne State College on Sunday. The Marauders took two of three games from the Wildcats after the two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.   
 
With 15 hits and five doubles in the series finale, the Marauders had at least 12 hits plus five extra base hits in all three games.
 
UMary improves to 21-14 overall and 14-8 in the Northern Sun. Wayne State is 21-17 and 13-12 in the NSIC.
 
After playing 13 of their last 15 games on the road, the Marauders return home to host the University of Minnesota Crookston in an NSIC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 15. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, ND, and starts a 5-game home stand with 10-of-12 games schedules to be played in the Capitol City.
 
The Marauders started fast, scoring three times in the first and twice in the second to take s 5-1 lead. Bryce Leafgren and Luke Rhee singled home runs in the first with Kieran Gaffney delivering a sacrifice fly. An error by the Wildcats and an Isaac Pegors sacrifice fly scored the two runs in the second.
 
The Wildcats tallied a trio of runs in the third to close the gap to 5-4. UMary responded by burying Wayne State over the next four innings, scoring 11 straight runs to end the game early after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
 
Leafgren delivered UMary's sixth run with the Marauders third of four sacrifice flies in the game in the fourth inning. Marcus Butts keyed a 4-run fifth inning with a 2-run single. In the sixth inning Butts accounted for the second of two UMary runs with a double to left to score Cru Walker. Rhee drove home the first two of four runs in the seventh with a 2-run double.
 
A trio of Marauders limited the Wildcats to seven hits and two earned runs. Justing Hanson pitched the first four innings and held Wayne State to two earned runs. Defending NSIC Pitcher of the Week Ryan Chamberlain struck out three in two scoreless and hitless innings. Jack Thompson finished the game out with a scoreless seventh inning.
 
Butts posted four hits in the game with a double. He drove in three runs and scored three times. Haney was 3-for-5, scored twice and drove in two runs. Gaffney scored three times and drove in a run. Leafgren had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. Rhee went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, a double, scored twice and drove in three runs. Pegors doubled twice, scored and had one RBI. Walker scored twice, had a hit and walked twice.
 
Gabe Monosmith led Wayne State with three hits, including a home run. He scored twice and drove in a run.
