Marauders come up short in doubleheader against the Mavericks

BISMARCK, ND – A hard-fought doubleheader would see the University of Mary softball team (10-20, 0-8 Northern Sun) lose 5-4, 6-2 to Minnesota State University, Mankato (20-12, 7-1 NSIC).

The Marauders travel to Duluth, MN, to take on the University of Minnesota Duluth in a doubleheader on Friday, April 3, at 1 pm.

GAME 1 University of Mary 4 MSU 5

After two scoreless innings, the Mavericks would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Daisy Sparrow responded with a monster blast over the left field wall to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Kaitlyn McLaughlin followed up with a single to center field to score Jianna Cota.

MSU regained a 3-2 lead after scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Ariana Retuta came around to score on a Jenel Mallari RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth to even up the score.

The Mavericks took the lead again at the top of the sixth inning. Daisy Sparrow came up clutch again when she smoked a single to right-center field to bring home Jenel Mallari to tie the game at 4-4.

The Mavericks would take their fourth and final lead with one run in the top of the seventh inning. UMary would be unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh as MSU won 5-4.

The Marauders finished the game with seven hits and four walks, while the Mavericks had seven hits and eight walks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Daisy Sparrow went 2-for-2 with one home run, two RBIs, one run scored, and one walk.

Jenel Mallari went 1-for-3 with one double, one RBI, and one run scored.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Cassidy Bagnell went 1-for-2 with one double and one run scored.

Janelle Bergmann went 1-for-1.

Francesca Villaneda went 1-for-3.

GAME 2 University of Mary 2 MSU 6

MSU scored one run in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. UMary tied the game up with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Back-to-back doubles hit by Ariana Retuta and Jianna Cota scored the Marauders first run. Janelle Bergmann then laced a single to right field to score Cota.

The Mavericks exploded for three runs in the fifth inning and then added on another run in the seventh inning. UMary would not be able to respond and fell 6-2 to MSU.

The Marauders posted seven hits and three walks, while the Mavericks had ten hits and one walk.

Ariana Retuta went 2-for-3 with one double and one run scored.
