COCO BEACH, FL – The University of Mary softball team earned a split on their first day of the Spring Games. UMary (6-10) fell to Cedarville University 5-3 before coming back and defeating Roosevelt University 2-1, earning a walk-off win in the seventh inning.
The Marauders remain in Coco Beach, FL, for day two of their Spring Games on Tuesday, March 3. UMary opens against Walsh University at 10 am and then challenges Holy Family University at 2:30 pm.
GAME 1 University of Mary 3 CU 5
UMary grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kaitlyn McLaughlin came around to score after Genevieve Hastings reached on a dropped fly ball. Ariana Retuta then singled up the middle to score Hastings.
The Marauders would score another run in the second inning when Daisy Sparrow scored on a sacrifice bunt by McLaughlin.
The Yellow Jackets would score one run in the third and fourth innings to cut the UMary lead to 3-2. CU would take a 5-3 lead after they scored two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth. The Marauders would fail to score any runs in the seventh inning and would fall to the Yellow Jackets.
Ivee Johnen got the start and pitched 1.2 innings of shutout ball. The Marauders recorded seven hits and two walks, while the Yellow Jackets had 16 hits and two walks.

Jenel Mallari went 2-for-2 with one walk.
Daisy Sparrow went 1-for-2 with one walk and one run scored.
Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one steal.
Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-4 with one run scored and one steal.
Ariana Retuta went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Jianna Cota went 1-for-1.
GAME 2 University of Mary 2 RU 1
The Marauders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after Kaitlyn McLaughlin singled to left field, scoring Janelle Bergmann. The Lakers would tie the game up 1-1 at the top of the sixth inning.
Genevieve Hastings walked and then stole second to open the bottom of the seventh inning. She then advanced to third on a groundout to second. Hastings would come off to score on a passed ball to give UMary a 2-1 walk-off win.
Arria Johnson got the start and picked up her fifth win of the season, more wins than any Marauder had last season. Johnson pitched her fourth complete game of the year, throwing seven innings and allowing only one run.
The Marauders finished the game with two hits and two walks, while the Lakers had five hits and one walk.
