Epic comeback pushes Marauders to the NSIC semifinals

SIOUX FALLS, SD – An amazing comeback fueled by a Bergan Kinnebrew game-winner helped lead the University of Mary women's basketball team (23-9, 15-7 Northern Sun) past Southwest Minnesota State University (17-12, 14-8 NSIC) 82-78 to advance to the semifinals of the NSIC tournament.

The Marauders will face Minnesota State University, Mankato, in the semis on Monday, March 2, at 11 am in the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD. UMary has now amassed 23 wins this season, which sets a NCAA record for most wins in program history.

UMary trailed SMSU by as many as 18 in the second quarter and was down 15 at halftime. The Marauders outscored the Mustangs 42-23 to earn the NSIC quarterfinals victory.

Bergan Kinnebrew recorded her third straight double-double, finishing with 37 points and 12 rebounds. Kinnebrew set an NSIC tournament record with 20 free throws attempted and tied the tournament record with 17 made free throws.

The Bismarck, ND, native also had five assists, three blocks, and two steals. Kinnebrew has now scored 680 points this season, which ranks second all-time in school history, trailing Cassie Askvig's 692 set back in 2019-20.

Allison Undlin had her 9th double-double of the year, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds. Undlin shot 5-of-10 from the field and blocked three shots. Chloe Pfau had 10 points and three rebounds. Emily Jaenke had eight points and three rebounds off the bench. Anna Lenzen added seven points.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 23-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. SMSU dominated the second quarter, outscoring UMary 32-21 to take a 55-40 lead at halftime.

The Marauders defense improved drastically in the second half, holding the Mustangs to 8-of-31 (25.8%) from the field. UMary cut the SMSU lead to 65-61 at the end of the third quarter. The Marauders would get the first lead of the second half (67-66) with 7:50 remaining.

The Marauders' lead would grow as large as seven, but the Mustangs would come back to tie the game at 78-78 with 12 seconds remaining. Kinnebrew would do what she has done all season and come up clutch for the Marauders as she blew by her defender to hit a layup to give UMary a two-point lead with seven seconds remaining. UMary played excellent defense on the following possession and forced the Mustangs to miss the game-tying shot. Undlin grabbed the rebound and knocked down two free throws to secure the win.

UMary shot 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the field and 5-of-13 (38.5%) from behind the arc, while SMSU went 30-of-63 (47.6%) from the floor and 6-of-17 (35.3%) from three. The Marauders shot 31-of-29 (79.5%) from the free-throw line, while the Mustangs went 12-of-16 (75%) from the charity stripe. UMary outrebounded SMSU 35-30. Both teams committed 19 turnovers.
