Marauders fall to Wolves, Jimmies in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, ND – The University of Mary softball team fell 8-3 to Northern State and 7-6 to the University of Jamestown at the Nelson Family Bubble in Jamestown, ND.

The Marauders return to Jamestown, ND, to challenge in a doubleheader on Sunday, February 8, at 9 am.

GAME 1 Northern State 8 University of Mary 3

Madison Hunter gave the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after she singled to left center to score Kaitlyn McLaughlin. The Wolves responded with two runs in the first and one run in the third to hold a 3-1 advantage.

UMary tied the game in the top of the fifth inning as Genevieve Hastings roped a double to left-center field, scoring Olivia Gomez and McLaughlin. NSU took control of the game after scoring three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. The Marauders failed to score in the seventh inning, securing the win for the Wolves.

Arria Johnson finished the game with 5.2 innings pitched, striking out one batter and allowing three earned runs. The Marauders recorded nine hits and two walks, while the Wolves had ten hits and four walks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Kaitlyn McLaughlin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one triple and a steal.

Madison Hunter went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, one double and one walk.

Jenel Mallari went 1-for-2 with one walk.

Olivia Gomez went 1-for-4 with one run scored.

Ariana Retuta went 1-for-3.

GAME 2 Jamestown 7 University of Mary 6

The Jimmies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. UMary responded in the bottom of the second with a two-run single to right field hit by Francesca Villaneda, scoring Madison Hunter and Ariana Retuta.

UJ regained the lead after scoring three runs in the third inning. Retuta made it a 4-3 ballgame in the bottom of the third when she singled to right field to bring home Olivia Gomez.

UJ added another run in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-3. The Marauders tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after Genevieve Hastings laced a two-run double to right field to score Gomez and Jianna Cota.

The Jimmies would score one run in the fifth and seventh innings to take back the lead. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Madison Hunter smashed a ball over the wall to make it a one-run game. UMary failed to add on another run, falling 7-6 to UJ.

The Marauders posted ten hits and two walks while the Jimmies had 13 hits and five walks.
