LIBERTY, MO – The University of Mary softball team came up short in their road doubleheader against William Jewel College. UMary (5-9) fell 10-2 in game one to WJC (7-9) and lost game two 4-3.
The Marauders head to Coco Beach, FL, to begin their Spring Games. UMary opens on Monday, March 2, against Roosevelt University at 12:15 pm and then challenge Cedarville University at 2:30 pm.
GAME 1 University of Mary 2 WJC 10 F/6
UMary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Ariana Retuta raked a double to left-center field, scoring Olivia Gomez and Genevieve Hastings. The Marauders offense would struggle the rest of the way and could not add on any more runs.
The Cardinals responded with a massive six-run bottom of the first inning to take a 6-2 lead. WJC would add on two runs in the third and a run in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game at 10-2.
Ivee Johnen pitched 5.2 innings of relief and allowed only two earned runs and struck out four batters. The Marauders finished with five hits and three walks, while the Cardinals had ten hits and five walks.

Ariana Retuta went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Genevieve Hastings went 1-for-2 with one double, one run scored, and one walk.
Olivia Gomez went 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Jenel Mallari went 1-for-2.
GAME 2 University of Mary 3 WJC 4
The Marauders took the lead in the top of the second inning after Jenel Mallari singled up the middle to score Lalaina Baker. The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the second with a run of their own to tie the game.
WJC scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. UMary showed grit as the Marauders scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings. The top of the sixth saw Cassidy Bagnell score on a Baker RBI groundout to the shortstop.
Olvia Gomez then made it a one-run game when she singled home Janelle Bergmann. UMary had opportunities to tie the game, but the Cardinals managed to hold on and secured a 4-3 win.
Elyssa Verploegen got the start and pitched two innings, allowing zero earned runs. The Marauders posted seven hits and three walks, while the Cardinals had six hits and five walks.
