MARYVILLE, MO – The University of Mary recorded single-game season-highs in hits and runs in the nightcap of the Marauders neutral site Northern Sun doubleheader against #9 Minnesota State University. Playing from behind in both games, UMary was unable to overcome early deficits in a pair of Mavericks wins.
The Marauders (3-7 overall, 1-4 NSIC) and Mavericks (9-1, 5-0) wrap up their weekend with a doubleheader starting at 11 am at Northwest Missouri State University's Bearcat Field in Maryville, MO. The opener is a 9-inning NSIC contest with game two a 7-inning non-conference matchup.
The Mavericks struck early with five 1
st-inning runs and followed with three more in the second on the way to a 13-1 win in the opener. Just one of Minnesota State's final eight runs of the game were earned as UMary made a trio of errors.
Isaac Pegors had a pair of hits to lead the UMary offense. Logan Miller led MSU with four RBIs. Jake Berkland and Pambos Nicoloudes both scored three runs.
Game two was a slugfest with the two teams combining for 14 extra base hits in a 17-11 win for Minnesota State.
The Mavericks opened the scoring again, this time with four runs in the second. UMary cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the third but MSU responded with a single run for a 5-2 lead.
A run-scoring wild pitch and an RBI double by
Marcus Butts drew the Marauders within 5-4 in the middle of five. The Mavericks responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning before hitting 2-run home runs in both the 6
th and 7
th innings for a 12-6 advantage.
Continuing to cut into the deficit, closed within 12-8 when
Kalem Haney doubled to score
Kieran Gaffney in the 8
th inning and
Hank Griffin followed with a 2-run home run. Once again the Mavericks responded, this time with five runs in the home half of the 8
th inning.
Mikey Ramirez closed the scoring for UMary with a 2-run double in the 9
th inning. The UMary centerfielder then scored on an MSU error.
Griffin finished with three hits. The Marauders shortstop scored twice and drove in two runs. Haney finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He also walked twice. Butts, Ramirez and
Luke Rhee also had two hits each as the Marauders pounded out 14 hits in the game. Ramirez scored twice and drove in two. Gaffney also touched home twice.
Luis Magers had a home run and four RBIs for MSU. Brandon Vicko homered twice, had three hits, scored four times and drove in two. Cole Yearsley scored three times and drove in five.
