ST. GEORGE, KS –
Kalem Haney scored the walk-off winning run in extra innings for the University of Mary as the Marauders downed the University of Sioux Falls 3-2 in the Northern Sun baseball opener for both teams. The Cougars regrouped for a game two 6-2 neutral site win.
The Marauders (2-4 overall, 1-1 NSIC) and Cougars (2-4 overall, 1-1 NSIC) close out their four-game set with a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 24. First pitch is set for 12 noon at the Rock Creek High School ballpark in St. George, KS. The opener is a 9-inning Northern Sun contest. The second game is slated as a 7-inning non-conference game.
GAME 1: UMary 3 USF 2
Aiden Johnson and
Cole Smith combined to limit Sioux Falls to two runs and six hits over eight innings of work to help the Marauders to a 3-2 win over the Cougars in extra innings. The contest was slated for seven innings.
Johnson was impressive in his second start of the season. He allowed single runs in the first and fifth innings as he went six total for UMary. Johnson struck out six, walked one and gave up five hits.
Smith pitched the final two innings and earned his second win of the season. He worked around a double in the seventh inning and a walk in the eighth to keep UMary in position for the win.
The Marauders took advantage of two two-out Cougars errors in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Haney, who had doubled with two outs, and
Hank Griffin both scored on the USF miscues.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth, the Cougars tied the game as the runner on third scored before the Marauders could retire the runner at first in an attempted steal.
The Marauders took advantage of speed on the basepaths and wildness on the mound in the eighth inning. Haney and Griffin both earned walks with Haney stealing both second and third base. Haney then came home on a wild pitch for the walk-off win.
Both UMary wins have come in extra innings this season.
Haney reached base in all four of his at bats, recording two hits and walking twice. He had three steals in the game.
Cru Walker picked up UMary's third hit in the game.
For USF Jake Ammann struck out 13, walked one and allowed three hits over seven innings. Both runs against Ammann were unearned.
GAME 2: Cougars 6 Marauders 2
After striking out eight in his first start of the season, Lucas Bergum did himself one better in start two as the junior righthander struck out nine over five innings of work. The Mandan, ND, gave up just five hits and a walk but was touched for four runs.
Five of the first six outs Bergum recorded in the game came on strikeouts. The Cougars then touched Bergum for a 2-run double in the third and a 2-run home run in the fifth.
UMary pulled within 4-1 in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Haney. Haney scored UMary's second run of the game in the seventh on a double by Griffin.
Haney finished game two 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. He was also hit by a pitch. For the day Haney reached base seven times in eight at bats.
Luke Rhee also had two hits for UMary in the game.
Mitch Iliff had two hits and two RBIs for USF. Brett Bauer earned the win with eight strikeouts and one run allowed in 4.1 innings of work.
