Bergan Kinnebrew came up big down the stretch for the University of Mary women's basketball team (22-8, 15-6 Northern Sun) as the Marauders took down Northern State University (15-12, 10-11 NSIC) 79-69 in overtime. The 22 wins for UMary are tied for the most wins in the NCAA era.
The Marauders have secured a top-four seed in the NSIC conference tournament and earned a first-round bye. UMary could finish as high as second place, depending on the results of Saturday's games. UMary will play in the quarterfinals of the NSIC tournament in the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD, next weekend.
Bergan Kinnebrew scored 35 points, with 12 coming in overtime, to go along with 12 rebounds and five assists. This is Kinnebrew's first double-double of the season and the second of her career. The Bismarck, ND, native shot 9-of-19 from the field and 17-of-18 from the free-throw line.
Allison Undlin recorded 20 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Undlin shot 6-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Anna Lenzen had 12 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
Cassie Erickson came off the bench to drop nine points.
Chloe Pfau posted a career-high 12 rebounds against the Wolves.
Eden Fridley had five rebounds and three steals.
UMary opened the game with a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter as the Marauders shot 50% from the field and NSU shot 25%. The Wolves responded by outscoring UMary 24-17 to make the score 37-33 going into halftime.
The third quarter was tightly contested as neither team could get going on offense. UMary would take a 49-44 lead heading into the final quarter. Both teams made clutch plays in the fourth quarter, but it would be Izzy Moore who sent the game into overtime when she made a layup with three seconds remaining in the quarter.
Kinnebrew took over the game in overtime, scoring 12 of the Marauders 14 points en route to a 79-69 victory. Her biggest basket came with 45 seconds remaining as she scored a layup to put UMary up by six.
Kinnebrew finished overtime by shooting 3-of-4 from the field and going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
UMary shot 23-of-63 (36.5%) from the field and 1-of-14 (7.1%) from behind the arc, while NSU went 26-of-68 (38.2%) from the floor and 6-of-21 (37%) from three. The Marauders shot 32-of-36 (88.9%) from the free-throw line, while the Wolves went 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the charity stripe.
The Marauders dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Wolves 48-38. UMary and NSU both committed 13 turnovers.
The Marauders return home to host senior night against the University of Jamestown on Saturday, February 21, at 2 pm in the McDowell Activity Center.
