MANDAN, ND – Able to fight back from a two-goal deficit once, #7 University of Mary couldn't manage to claw its way back a second time in a 4-2 loss to visiting Iowa State University.
The Cyclones scored the first two goals of the game and the last two goals while the Marauders tallied twice in between the Iowa State scoring runs.
The Marauders are 7-4-0-0-1-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) this season overall and 3-2-0 (W-L-OTL) for 8 points in Midwest College Hockey play. Iowa State is 3-10-0-0-0-1 and 1-4-0 for 3 points in the MCH.
Taking advantage of four power play opportunities in the first period, the Cyclones scored once with a man advantage to gain a 1-0 lead over the first 20 minutes of play.
Iowa State extended its lead to 2-0 at 13:37 of the second period.
Taking advantage of a Cyclones penalty,
Matt Scribner scored a power play goal at 16:07 to cut the Marauders deficit in half.
UMary tied the game 7:53 into the third when
Harrison Johnson found the net for the second time this season.
Despite pushing hard to break the tie, the Marauders were unable to slip another puck past Lennert Critzmann, who made 50 saves in the game for the Cyclones.
Instead, it was Iowa State that reclaimed its lead when Connor Gronewald scored at 15:27. The Cyclones clinched the win with an empty net goal by Max Johnson with just 55 seconds remaining in the game.
Iowa State scored once on the power play while UMary was 1-for-2 on opportunities with a man advantage. The Marauders served 14 minutes in the penalty box to eight for the Cyclones.
Caleb Cross made 29 saves for the Marauders.
