BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's soccer team celebrated their two seniors prior to the game, and both
Chloe Brand and
Payton Kooiman made sure it was a day they would remember as the Marauders downed visiting Southwest Minnesota State University 2-0.
The win extends UMary's unbeaten string to nine games. This is the second-longest streak for the Marauders since beginning NCAA and Northern Sun play in 2006. UMary went ten games without a loss in 2022.
With the Marauders (9-2-3 overall, 8-1-2 NSIC) seeking to keep a grip on second place in the Northern Sun with the conference tournament fast approaching, UMary's two seniors combined forces to spring
Dina Polanco free for a goal just 2:26 into the game. That early spark earned both Brand and Kooiman assists on Polanco's 12
th goal of the season.
UMary doubled its lead in the 13' when a corner kick from
Ivy Wessel was deflected into the net off a Mustangs defender. It was Wessel's first career goal for UMary.
Defensively the Marauders contained the Mustangs (2-9-3/2-7-2) attack. UMary limited SMSU to two shots, both in the first half, with neither shot on goal.
The Marauders held a 23-2 edge in shots while also owning the advantage in shots on frame (10-0) and corner kicks (8-2).
Kadyn Dilger and Elena van Heukelom combined to earn the seventh clean sheet of the season for the Marauders and the second shutout in a row.
The Marauders close out the weekend with a visit from the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday, October 18. The match is set for 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
