MINOT, ND – Looking for a second straight win over their Highway 83 rival, the #10 University of Mary hockey team stayed within striking distance of #2 Minot State University through two periods. The Beavers then broke open a one-goal game with three in the third to claim a 4-0 win over the visiting Marauders in a Midwest College Hockey meeting.
UMary is 18-8-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 15-8-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 4-3-0-0-0-0 in MCH play (12 points). Additionally the Marauders are 11-8-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally ranked teams. Minot State is 18-1-1-0-0-1 overall and leads the MCH with 21 points in nine games.
In a scoreless first period,
Caleb Cross made 13 saves for UMary while Will Dyke turned aside ten shots for Minot State. The Beavers broke onto the scoreboard just 2:09 into the second on a goal by Matthew Yakubowski and carried a 1-0 lead into the third.
Minot State pulled away with three goals in the third.
Despite six power play opportunities, UMary was unable to light the lamp. Minot State scored once on four chances with a man advantage.
The Marauders managed 27 shots in the game but couldn't get the puck past Dyke. Cross finished the game with 34 saves.
UMary continues its four-game road trip with a pair of games at the University of Colorado on January 16-17.
