JAMESTOWN, ND – Despite a sensational night in net by University of Mary netminder
Caleb Cross, solo goals in each of the first two periods by homestanding University of Jamestown proved too much for the #11 Marauders men's hockey team to overcome in a 2-0 loss to the #7 Jimmies.
Cross posted a season-high 43 saves on the night as he scrambled to keep the Marauders hopes of capturing the Jug Trophy alive. He faced 18 shots in both the first and third periods and nine in the second. His previous high for saves this season was 40 and also came on the road against Jamestown.
Taking advantage of their first of five power play opportunities of the game, the Jimmies cracked open the scoring at 14:15 of the first period on a goal by Carson Brown. Despite outshooting UMary 18-7 in the first period it was the only goal.
Both teams attempted nine shots in the second period but once again it was the Jimmies who scored, this time at 15:04 on a goal by Jordan Baransky. UMary earned three power play chances in the middle stanza but was unable to convert the opportunities into goals.
Cross continued to keep UMary in the game despite an 18-10 shot advantage for Jamestown in the third as neither team could dent the net.
With the win, the Jimmies maintain possession of The Jug. The travelling trophy is in its second season and goes to the team that wins the season series. Friday's win was the third in four meetings for Jamestown.
The two teams switch sites for the fifth and final meeting of the regular season between the two rivals located 100 miles part on I-94. The Marauders host the Jimmies at 7 pm on Saturday, January 24, at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND, for the Midwest College Hockey game.
UMary is 20-9-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 17-9-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 4-4-0-0-0-0 in MCH play (12 points). Additionally the Marauders are 11-9-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally ranked teams. Jamestown is 17-11-1-0-1-0 overall and owns 14 MCH points in nine games.
