BOULDER, CO – An impressive individual effort by
Matt Scribner on the opening goal of the game was all the #10 University of Mary hockey team needed in an 8-0 Marauders road win at the University of Colorado as
Caleb Cross was perfect in net to earn his second shutout of the season.
UMary improves to 19-8-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 16-8-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams. Colorado is 7-12-1-0-0-1 overall.
The Marauders have defeated the Buffaloes in all three meetings this season. The weekend and season series ends with a fourth and final game on Saturday, January 17. The puck drops at 8 pm CT/7 pm MT in Boulder, CO.
In the first period with the Marauders looking to kill off a Buffaloes power play opportunity, Scribner poke-checked the puck away from a Colorado skater just outside the UMary blue line. Quickly picking up the puck, Scribner flipped the script as he flew down the ice on a counterattack. Making a move into the slot while fighting off a CU defender, Scribner showed his backhand to deke Buffaloes goaltender Matthew Server to the ice before pulling the puck back and tucking it between the pads and the right post. Scored 13:14 into the game, it was the only goal of the opening period.
The shorthanded goal was the first for Scribner in the defenseman's two seasons at UMary and the eighth of this season for the Marauders. UMary opponents have scored just once goal this year while skating down a man.
The Marauders specialty units struck again when
Alex Senf scored a power play goal at 7:54 to double the UMary lead to 2-0. Skating around the top of the perimeter without any defensive pressure, Senf ripped a shot from just inside the right circle into the left side of the net for his team-leading 17
th goal of the season.
Just 79 seconds later, UMary struck again when
Joe Gronholz backhanded a loose puck from just outside the crease into the right side of the net for a 3-0 lead.
The Marauders offense found another gear in the third period, scoring five times.
Nick Bradshaw opened the scoring for UMary when he slammed home a rebound off an initial shot from
Crae Dawson at 6:16. An initial shot by
Isaac Flatley shot resulted in the next UMary goal, this time with
Dain Sardelli cleaning up the rebound for a 5-0 UMary lead.
Lucas Medeiros, after intercepting an attempted CU breakout pass in neutral ice, rifled home an unassisted goal from the left circle at 11:45.
Hunter Mangan grew the UMary lead to 7-0 when he knocked in another goal off a rebound of a Flatley shot.
David Loahr scored UMary's fifth and final goal of the third period from a similar spot as Medeiros when his shot was slowed but not stopped by Server.
Cross finished with 28 saves to claim the shutout. Server made 41 saves for Colorado.
Senf and Loahr both had a goal and an assist. Gronholz had a goal and an assist. Flatley picked up two assists.
