Explosive first period powers #14 Marauders past #25 Buffaloes

MANDAN, ND – An early offensive explosion by #14 University of Mary led the Marauders to an 8-4 win over #25 University of Colorado and a weekend sweep of the Buffaloes. UMary struck for four goals in the first period and followed with another three in the second.

Eight different Marauders scored in the game, including another big game by Joe Gronholz. After tallying twice in UMary's 4-2 win on Friday, the UMary forward followed with one goal and three assists on Saturday.

Both teams also re-engaged their power play as half the goals in the game came with a man advantage. The two teams combined to go 6-for-11 on the power play after an 0-for-9 effort on Friday. UMary was 3-for-6 with an extra skater while Colorado was 3-for-5.

UMary dominated the opening period, outshooting Colorado 23-4 on the way to building a 4-2 lead.

Colorado scored the opening goal just 1:36 into the contest. UMary responded with a vengeance, reeling off the next four goals as Derel Dropik, Gronholz, Nick Bradshaw and David Loahr all lit the lamp, with the goals by Gronholz and Loahr coming on the power play.

UMary needed just 61 seconds to score twice in the second. Matt Scribner produced a power play goal 34 seconds into the period and Hunter Mangan tallied at 1:01 for a 6-2 UMary lead. Refusing to fade away, the Buffaloes sandwiched power play goals around an Alex Senf goal, sending the game into the second intermission with UMary leading 7-3.

Scoring plummeted in the third with UMary posting the only goal when Palmer Sinclair shot the puck into an empty net with 42 seconds left in the contest.

UMary held a 57-26 edge in shots for the game. Caleb Cross was credited with 22 saves. Matthew Srever had 49 after stopping 48 on Friday.

Five Marauders joined Gronholz with multipoint nights. Scribner and Loahr had a goal and two assists while Senf, Mangan, Bradshaw had one of each.

The Marauders wrap up a 7-game home stand next weekend with a visit from the University of Arizona. Game one is Thursday, October 2, before a playing again on Saturday, October 4. The puck drops at 7 pm both nights at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
