MANDAN, ND – A pair of goals late in the first period combined with an impressive performance by the #14 University of Mary penalty kill unit carried UMary to a 4-2 home win over #25 University of Colorado.
Joe Gronholz tallied twice in a Marauders win that saw UMary kill off all six power play opportunities for the Buffaloes.
A scrappy game featured 11 penalties called on the Marauders to eight on the Buffaloes. Neither team managed to score on the power play but Gronholz picked up a big shorthanded goal.
The Marauders improve to 2-2-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL). The Buffaloes are 2-3-0-0-0-0.
With time running low in the first period,
David Loahr gave UMary a 1-0 lead at 17:18 after picking up the puck in the right corner and jamming home a goal under Buffaloes goaltender Matthew Server's pads.
Just over two minutes later with Colorado on its third power play of the game, Gronholz forced a turnover at the blue line in front of the Buffaloes bench. Skating in all alone on Server, Gronholz lifted a backhander into the top left corner of the net with 20 seconds left in the first period for a 2-0 lead.
Colorado refused to fade away, twice pulling within a goal. And twice UMary responded. Following a Buffaloes goal at 5:25 of the second,
Dain Sardelli countered with his second goal of the season at 10:47 to push the Marauders lead back to two goals at 3-1, tapping home a centering pass in front of the net from
Isaac Flatley.
In a quick start to the third period the Buffaloes scored just 71 seconds into the final frame. Fifty seconds later Gronholz pushed the UMary lead back to 4-2 with his second goal of the day and third of the season. Crashing the left side of the net, Gronholz knocked home a pass through traffic in the crease from
Matt Scribner at 2:01.
Zane Clausen and the Marauders ensured the two goal UMary advantage held up the rest of the night. Clausen made nine of his 23 saves in the final period.
Server finished with 48 saves for CU as UMary held a 52-25 edge in shots.
Eight Marauders figured into the scoring with only Gronholz a part of two goals.
The Marauders and the Buffaloes wrap up the weekend with a 5 pm meeting on Saturday, September 27, at the Starion Sports Center Schwan Cadillac Rink. Additionally former Marauders hockey players will compete in an alumni game at 3 pm.
