2nd period surge carries #14 Marauders past Royals 9-1 in season opener

MANDAN, ND – A flurry of goals by #14 University of Mary early in the second period sent the Marauders surging past visiting Lake Region State College 9-1 for a victory in the season-opener. UMary scored five goals in a stretch of less than six minutes in the second period to break open a game knotted 1-1 following the first period.
Amraj Gill scored a pair of goals in his first game with the Marauders. The defenseman struck for UMary's lone goal of the first period, posting a goal at 14:45 to tie the game after the Royals scored the opening goal of the night.
 
Dain Sardelli, another UMary (1-0-0-0-0-0 W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) newcomer, opened the scoring floodgates for UMary in the second period. Sardelli registered the game-winning goal when he tallied unassisted 1:57 into the second to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead. Goals soon followed from Will Falconer (3:11), Palmer Sinclair (3:33), Hunter Mangen (6:57) and Isaac Flately (7:31), who was also making his debut in the Blue & Orange, for a 6-1 UMary lead after two periods.
 
The Marauders finished with another three goals in the third as Gill, Alex Senf and David Loahr all found the back of the net.
 
Three other Marauders joined Gill with multi-point nights. Sardelli finished with a goal and two assists while Senf, Flately and Mangen all added an assist to their goals.
 
Caleb Cross and Zane Clausen split the game in net, turning aside 13 of the 14 shots they faced from the Royals. Cross stopped 5-of-6 shots and Clausen had a save on all eight shots LRSC fired at him.
 
UMary outshot the ACHA MD2 Lake Region State 60-14, including a 21-4 edge in shots in the second period.
 
The Marauders next host #9 Drury University in a pair of games September 20-21. Game time Saturday between the two nationally-ranked ACHA MD1 teams is 7 pm with Sunday's contest slated for 2 pm.
