Marauders honor seniors, end 2025 season in defeat to Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – The 2025 season came to an end for the University of Mary softball team (9-44, 2-26 Northern Sun) as the Marauders lost 5-0, 4-2 in a hard-fought doubleheader against St. Cloud State University (41-14, 20-7 NSIC).

UMary hosted senior night between games against SCSU. The Marauders honored Sariah Perez, Kelsey Mischel, Ariana Retuta, Hannah Chambers, Whitney Carnes and Sophia Janssen for their contributions on and off the field at the University of Mary.

GAME 1 St. Cloud State University 5 University of Mary 0

A single up the middle gave SCSU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Huskies added three more runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to hold a 5-0 advantage. Macey Clark shut down the Marauders offense in the seventh inning to earn her 18th win of the season.

Hannah Chambers pitched a gem in her final start for the Marauders. Chambers went five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out one batter.

UMary recorded four hits and one walk, while SCSU had ten hits and two walks.

GAME 2 St. Cloud State University 4 University of Mary 2

The Huskies scored two runs to open the game in the top of the first inning. The Marauders tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

Janelle Bergmann smashed a double to right center field that brought home Jenel Mallari and Ariana Retuta.

A two-run homer by Brooke Holmes gave SCSU a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Justyce Porter came on in the sixth inning and picked up a two-inning save to give the Huskies the victory.

Elyssa Verploegen was outstanding out of the pen for UMary. Verploegen pitched 2.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing no hits and striking out three batters.

UMary posted six hits and no walks, while SCSU had ten hits and two walks.
