Hull walk-off winner gives Marauders split of extra-inning games with Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – Noah Hull delivered an extra inning walk-off winner for the University of Mary baseball team in the opening game of the Marauders Northern Sun doubleheader against visiting St. Cloud State University. The Huskies rebounded to claim an extra inning win in the night cap over the Marauders.

GAME 1: University of Mary 8 St. Cloud State University 7 (8 innings)
Closing in on the University of Mary's career record for runs batted in, Noah Hull delivered the first and last runs of the game as the Marauders opened the day with an 8-7 win over St. Cloud State University. In a game scheduled for seven innings, Hull drove a 1-2 pitch into left field to scored Kalem Haney with the winning run.

PIVOT POINT
In a game of runs, the Marauders scored three runs in the first inning and claimed 6-1 and 7-2 leads before the Huskies tied the game in the 5th inning on a 2-run home run by Wilmis Castro, his second round tripper of the game.

Following a pair of scoreless innings of relief by Sam Hayen, the Marauders started fast in the eighth inning as Haney delivered a leadoff double to left center. Haney moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Leafgren, who reached first when the Huskies attempt to cut down Haney moving to third failed.

Hull, after fouling off a pair of two-strike pitches, then went opposite field with a single to left to score Haney with the winning run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
STAT OF THE GAME
Noah Hull is three RBIs from tying the UMary career record of 141 by Jeff Wedul and Tyler Liffrig. Hull now has 138 runs batted in over the course of his Marauders career.

GAME 2: Huskies 7 Marauders 2 (11 innings)
The Marauders Ryan Chamberlain and the Huskies Brady Nelson locked horns in a pitching duel with both pitching into extra innings. Scheduled for seven innings after the opener went extra innings, Chamberlain tossed nine innings with Nelson completing eight. Both allowed just two runs in exceptional performances.

UMary struck first when Krece Papierski singled home Bryce Leafgren in the fourth inning. With time running out on the Huskies, SCSU took its first lead of the day on a 2-run home run by Liam Moreno in the sixth inning.

The Marauders forced extra innings in stunning fashion. Coming to the plate with two outs, no runners on base the Marauders trailing 2-1, freshman catcher Marcus Butts was down to a final strike on five straight pitches after falling behind in the count 1-2. Twice he fouled off pitches to stay alive and left two others sail out of the strike zone to reach a full count. With UMary celebrating Bismarck Youth Baseball Day at the ballpark, the Bismarck, ND, native launched a blast over the left field wall for his first collegiate home run to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.

PIVOT POINT
With Chamberlain keeping the Huskies in check by retiring the last ten batters he faced, including perfect innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, the Marauders leadoff hitter reached base in both the home half of the eighth and ninth innings. Hopes of a second straight walk-off win were short-circuited by double play balls both times.

SCSU finally broke through in loud fashion with four straight hits in the 11th inning, including three straight doubles that produced three of the Huskies five runs and a 7-2 lead. UMary managed to load the bases in the bottom of the inning but couldn't close the gap.
