INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Reece Barnhardt made history for the University of Mary wrestling team by becoming the first-ever NCAA National Champion in program history.

Barnhardt won all four of his matches at the 2025 NCAA tournament to win the 133-pound weight class. The Bismarck, ND, native finishes his collegiate career as the only four-time All-American and national champion in UMary history.  

Sean Solis and Kaden Renner also earned podium finishes on day two of the nationals. Solis took third at 141 pounds and Renner finished seventh at 157 pounds. The Marauders finished in sixth place with 51 points as a team, the best finish in NCAA history for UMary. The previous best finish for the Marauders was 13th in 2023.

Barnhardt won a thrilling match to start the day, defeating Christian Davis (Lander) by an 8-5 sudden victory in overtime in the semifinals. The Bismarck, ND, native trailed 4-2 in the late seconds of the third period when Barnhardt recorded a takedown but failed to ride Davis out as the score was 5-5 going into overtime. After a hard-fought overtime, Barnhardt hit the match-winning takedown with 20 seconds remaining.

The Championship match showcased why Barnhardt was the best wrestler at 133 pounds. The four-time All-American native defeated Peter Rolle (Central Okla.) by an impressive 10-4 decision. The score was tied 4-4 going into the second period. Barnhardt would ride out Rolle in the second, earning two stall calls to take a 5-4 lead. The third period saw Barnhardt earn an escape and then hit a takedown to secure the match and a national title.

Solis opened his day with a 7-6 decision victory over Ronan Schuelke (McKendree). He followed up by defeating Isham Peace (Lander) by a 6-2 decision. The Long Beach, CA, native finished the season by taking down Joseph Airola (Neb.-Kearney) in an impressive 12-7 decision in his third-place match.

Renner dropped his first match on day two, losing to Caleb Meunier (Minnesota St.) by a 10-8 match. The Bismarck, ND, native responded by coming back to pin Casey Barnett (Tiffin) after 2:07 of action to finish seventh. Renner was trailing Bennet 7-0 in the first period before hitting a reversal and then earning the pinfall.
