Marauders defeat MSU 7-3, falls 12-1 to NSU

JAMESTOWN, ND – Playing two games in Jamestown, ND, the University of Mary softball team defeated Mayville State University 7-3 and fell 12-1 to Northern State University.

UMary returns to action in Jamestown on Friday, February 21, to take on Dickinson State University at 6 pm.

Freshman Hailey Altenhof got the start and pitched four innings, allowing only one earned run to pick up her first collegiate victory. Freshman Elyssa Verploegen then picked up her second save of the season after she pitched the final three innings in relief. Verploegen struck out three batters and gave up two runs.

MSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single. UMary responded with two runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth.

Madison Hunter tied the game up when she came home to score on a wild pitch. Kelsey Mischel then roped a double to left-center, scoring Chloe Robinson.

The top of the fifth inning saw Francesca Villaneda smack a two-run double to left-center to score Madison Schamanski and Genevieve Hastings. Cassidy Bagnell, pinch-running for Villaneda, scored on an error by the Comets.

Chloe Robinson made the score 7-1 when she smoked a single to right field, scoring Ariane Sims and Hunter.

MSU managed to grab one run in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to make it a 7-3 ballgame. Verploegen struck out the final batter to secure a Marauders victory.

After two scoreless innings, NSU took a 2-0 lead after scoring one run in the third inning and one run in the fourth. The Wolves opened the game up in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-0 lead.

Janelle Bergmann put the Marauders on the board when she smashed a solo home run over the left-field wall.

NSU finished the game with another five-run inning in the seventh to take a 12-1 lead. The Marauders failed to capitalize on a lead-off single in the seventh inning as the game ended with a Wolves victory.
