FREMONT, NE –
Joe Gronholz delivered a weekend split for the #12 University of Mary hockey team with an overtime goal as the visiting Marauders recovered from a stunning third period by #21 Midland University to down the Warriors 5-4.
After scoring a pair of goals in each of the first two periods, UMary owned a 4-0 lead entering the final 20 minutes. Midland used a shorthanded goal at 3:32 of the third period to open the scoring for the home team on Senior Night for the Warriors.
UMary penalties gave Midland a spark. With under eight minutes remaining both teams had players disqualified. Additional penalties on UMary for tripping, too many men on the ice and a bench penalty led to a series of 5-on-3 power play opportunities for Midland and the Warriors converted. Midland scored power play goals at 13:32 and 14:32 to close the gap to 4-3.
Caleb Cross turned away a breakaway and a rebound shot by Midland with 90 seconds left to preserve the UMary lead. The Warriors earned an overtime session with four seconds on the clock when Midland scored on a tip in of a long shot.
With both teams skating 3-on-3 in the overtime session, Midland was called for too many men on the ice at 1:37, allowing UMary to add another skater for a 4-on-3 power play. Taking advantage of the extra skater, the Marauders needed just 26 seconds to claim the Midwest College Hockey win.
Holding the puck in the left circle,
Alex Senf identified Gronholz at the top of the right circle cutting towards the net. Senf zipped a pass to the bottom of the right circle for Gronholz and the Marauders leading goal scorer hammered home the puck for his 19
th counter of the season.
The Marauders finished with two goals on eight power play opportunities, the second straight game UMary earned eight chances with a man advantage. Midland went 2-for-6 on the power play.
The penalty-filled game featured 14 penalties for 65 minutes on UMary and 66 minutes on 16 penalties for Midland.
Senf and
Lyndon Orr finished with two assists for the Marauders.
Derek Dropik had a goal and an assist.
David Loahr and
Michael Heitkamp also had goals for UMary, with Heitkamp scoring on a the power play.
The Marauders improve to 22-11-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 21-11-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 12-6-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. Midland is 16-16-0-0-0-1 overall and 8-12-0-0-0-0 in MCH play.
UMary next faces the University of Jamestown in a home-and-home series with the Jimmies to wrap up the regular season with The Jug and second play in the MCH North division on the line. The Marauders need to sweep the Jimmies to move past their I-94 rival in the MCH standings and claim The Jug Trophy in year one of the travelling trophy.
The Marauders play at Jamestown Friday, February 14, before hosting the Jimmies at 7 pm on Saturday, February 15.
