Power play woes sink #12 Marauders in 4-2 loss to #21 Warriors

FREMONT, NE – Held to just one goal on seven power play opportunities, the #12 University of Mary hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision at #21 Midland University. The Warriors scored the final two goals of the game to edge the Marauders in Midwest College Hockey play.
 
The Marauders dip to 21-11-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 20-11-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 11-6-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. Midland is 16-15-0-0-0-1 overall and 8-11-0-0-0-0 in MCH play.
 
The Marauders and Warriors took turns scoring into the third period. With the first period winding down, Midland used a power play opportunity to score with 69 seconds left in the opening session.
 
Lyndon Orr found the equalizer for the Marauders just 2:45 in the second period, scoring the Marauders lone power play goal of the game. Specialty team play continued to take center stage when Logan Wotton scored the second power play goal for Midland at 15:50 to send the Warriors into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.
 
Once again the Marauders found a way to tie the game. Joe Gronholz, standing in front of the Warriors net, scored his team-leading 18th goal at 7:53 when he tipped home a shot by Dylan Cunningham.
 
Thomas Babb broke the tie when he scored midway through the third period for the Warriors. Babb sealed the game with his second goal of the third period at 16:32.
 
The Marauders finished 1-for-7 on power play opportunities while the Warriors scored twice in five opportunities. UMary was cited for six infractions for 12 minutes while Midland committed nine penalties for 26 minutes.
 
UMary outshot Midland 31-19, including a 15-9 edge in the third period. The Marauders outshot the Warriors in each of the first two periods also.
 
The Marauders and the Warriors wrap up the weekend series with a 7:30 pm game Saturday, February 8.
