BISMARCK, ND –
Ty Rogers recorded his first double double of the season to lead the University of Mary men's basketball team in scoring and rebounding but it was a strong second half from behind the arc for visiting St. Cloud State University that sent the Huskies home with an 84-54 win over the Marauders.
Rogers finished the Northern Sun contest with 15 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. The junior forward went 6-for-7 at the line as he was fouled six times in the game. Rogers also delivered two assists.
It was the third double double for Rogers in his college career after posting two last season.
Behind an aggressive in-your-face defensive effort and solid work at the free throw line, the Marauders (5-21 overall, 3-14 NSIC) kept pace with the Huskies (15-10, 11-6) much of the first half as there were four lead changes and four ties in the first 15 minutes of play. Three straight
Matija Otasevic free throws gave the Marauders their last lead of the game at 19-16 before a
Jeremiah Jones jumper in the paint allowed UMary to claim its largest advantage of the night at 21-17. The Huskies responded with an 11-0 run and eventually took a 36-31 lead into intermission.
SCSU found its offensive flow in the second half. Just 2-for-11 from behind the arc in the opening half, the Huskies knocked down 9-of-15 3-point attempts in the final 20 minutes and shot 54.8% overall for the second half. UMary made 1-of-11 trey attempts in the second half and was 2-for-19 on the night behind the arc.
The Marauders shot 31% overall for the game and went 18-for-24 at the free throw line. The Huskies converted 51% of their shot attempts and finished 13-of-23 at the line.
Alex Mattes scored 12 points for UMary, making 6-of-9 free throws. It was the third straight game in double figures for the sophomore guard, who also made two steals.
Kevin McGaskey scored 10 points and made two steals.
One of five Huskies in double figures, Lucas Morgan led SCSU with 15 points. Kynan Philippe hit four treys and scored 14 points.
The Marauders begin a 3-game road trip at MSU Moorhead on Saturday, February 8. Game time is 5:30 pm at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, MN.
