Tide turns against Marauders in final minute of Senior Day setback to Cougars

BISMARCK, ND – After going blow for blow for nearly 39 minutes with visiting University of Sioux Falls, the tide cruelly turned against the University of Mary men's basketball team in the last 75 seconds of play. The Marauders pulled even on a Kevin McGaskey basket with 1:37 to play before the Cougars scored the last seven points of the game to capture an 82-75 win over UMary on Senior Day.

Jeremiah Jones delivered another outstanding all-around game for UMary. The sophomore guard hit four treys and scored a team-leading 18 points. Jones grabbed seven rebounds and delivered two assists.

One of four seniors honored prior to the game, McGaskey scored 11 points and delivered five assists. He was 7-for-8 at the free thrown line.

Wylee Delorme wrapped up his freshman season with a 15-point outing. The Devils Lake, ND, native was 3-for-5 behind the arc and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. He also added three assists.

Delorme keyed a big night by the UMary bench as the Marauders reserves held a 38-12 edge in scoring. Ty Johnson and Cayden Redfield both hit a pair of treys while producing eight points each and Alex Mattes added seven points.

In a game that featured 12 ties and eight lead changes, the Marauders overcame a 10-point first half deficit with a 21-7 run to claim a 36-32 lead with Delorme scoring the last five points. USF battled back to enter intermission with a 43-42 lead.

Trailing 56-46 in the second half, Redfield hit a pair of treys and Jones scored seven straight points to cap a 15-5 run to even the game at 61-61. The Cougars regained the lead five more times and five times the Marauders answered, the last time on a McGaskey basket in the lane. But answering the bell six times proved insurmountable.

Sioux Falls broke the tie one last time on a Taylen Ashley three-pointer with 1:14 to play to give the Cougars a 78-75 lead. Following a UMary miss, USF scored in the paint. A turnover in the closing seconds for the Marauders allowed the Cougars to close the scoring with a pair of free throws with nine seconds left.

UMary held a narrow 38-37 edge in rebounding. Both teams went 15-for-17 at the free throw line and both committed 16 fouls. The Marauders shot 39.3% for the game and went 12-of-31 behind the arc. The Cougars made 43% of their shots and hit 13-of-30 treys.

In addition to McGaskey, the Marauders also honored Rich Ashu, Liam Dougherty and Gunner Swanson on Senior Night. Additionally Dougherty received the Kevin Olson Scholarship.

The Marauders finish the 2024-25 season 5-26 overall and 3-19 in the Northern Sun (14th place). The Cougars are 16-12 and 12-10.
