MANDAN, ND – The #14 University of Mary hockey team made a three goal first period outburst stand up as the Marauders held off visiting Waldorf University 3-2.
The Marauders annual Military Appreciation game looked like another rout after the first period as
Hunter Mangan,
Crae Dawson and
Joe Gronholz all scored goals for UMary in a 103 second time span. Mangan opened the scoring at 4:13, Dawson scored an unassisted goal at 4:48 with Gronholz posting a power play goal at 5:53 to conclude the scoring flurry.
UMary, after scoring six goals in the third period Friday night in a 10-1 win over Walford, continued to apply pressure in the second period, held a 16-8 edge in shots but it was the Warriors that scored the only two goals to close the gap to 3-2.
The Marauders continued to generate chances in the third with a massive 24-10 shot advantage.
Caleb Cross made sure UMary's lone goal advantage held up, making ten saves in the third and turning aside 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the game.
Vaughn Holbeche made 58 saves on the night for the Warriors.
UMary finished with 61 shots in the game to 30 for Waldorf in the Midwest College Hockey meeting. The Marauders finished 1-for-6 on the power play while the Warriors scored once in three opportunities with a man advantage.
The Marauders improved to 21-10-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 20-10-0-0-0-0 in ACHA MD1 play and 11-5-0-0-0-0 against Midwest College Hockey competition. Waldorf is 4-20-0-0-0-0 overall and 4-16-0-0-0-0 in MCH play.
UMary next plays at Midland University on February 7-8 in Fremont, NE.
