Early outburst doesn't hold in season opener for the Marauders

TUCSON, AZ – The University of Mary baseball team erupted for six runs in the first inning of the season but couldn't hold off Colorado State University Pueblo in a 9-7 loss to open the season.

Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first inning, a double by Krece Papierski scored Kalem Haney to tie the game. A run-scoring single through the right side of the infield by Bryce Leafgren was followed by a 2-run double to center for Isaac Pegors for a 4-1 UMary advantage. Cru Walker delivered the Marauders third double of the inning to score another run before coming home on a Mikey Ramirez single for a 6-1 lead over the ThunderWolves.

Playing in a neutral site non-conference game at Kino Stadium in Tucson, CSU Pueblo fought back with three runs in the second and four unearned runs in the third to give the Pack an 8-6 lead.

After offenses had their way for the first couple innings, pitching took center stage as neither team scored again until the eighth inning.

Lucas Burgum was impressive in his Marauders debut. Taking to the mound in the third inning, he held the ThunderWolves at bay with 5.2 scoreless innings of relief. The junior righthander from Mandan, ND, struck out six and allowed just two hits and one walk.

While Burgum stymied the CSU Pueblo attack, UMary was also unable to find a way to score again until the 8th inning. Noah Hull led off with a double to right and claimed third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Leafgren sacrifice fly to center. Hull was the last UMary baserunner as CSU Pueblo retired the last six Marauders of the game.

Leafgren finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Kieran Gaffney and Ramirez both had two hits in their UMary debuts. Eight Marauders had a hit in the game and seven scored runs.

Rob Mansour drove in three runs for the Pack and Joseph Quintana and Devean Alvarez both produced two hits and two runs.

The Marauders next play two games on Saturday, February 1, in Tucson. UMary opens against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs at 3 pm CT before a rematch with CSU Pueblo at 7 pm CT.
