Road trip continues for #11 Marauders as UMary set for weekend visit to #24 Midland

THIS WEEK
In the midst of a 7-game road trip, the #11 University of Mary hockey team heads to Fremont, NE, for a pair of games against #24 Midland University on December 5-6. The puck drops between the Marauders and the Warriors at 8 pm on Friday and 7 pm on Saturday.
 
The Marauders and Warriors games are non-conference contests. The two teams will play their Midwest College Hockey series in Mandan, ND, on January 30-31.

THE RECORDS
UMary is 12-6-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 11-6-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 4-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH play (12 points). Additionally the Marauders are 9-6-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally ranked teams… Midland is 6-9-3-0-1-0 overall and 2-2-2-0-0-0 (8 points) in MCH play.

THE JUG SERIES
With the Marauders 3-2 win at Jamestown on Saturday, UMary has pulled even in the 2025-26 Jug Series as both teams have won games. Three games remain in the best-of-5 series.
 
Located just 100 miles apart on I-94, the University of Mary and the University of Jamestown compete annually for a travelling trophy called simply "The Jug." The team that wins the yearly series of games claims possession of The Jug, which is a Bridgeman Russell Company Jug. UMary purchased the trophy and had "The Jug" painted and logoed. Each winning team is responsible for placing their institution's name and record in the series on "The Jug" each season at their cost using Mann Signs of Bismarck, ND, to ensure consistency.
 
The Jug series started in the 2024-25 season with the Jimmies claiming the title after winning 4-of-5 games. 
 
HISTORY LESSON – UMARY VS. MIDLAND
The Marauders are 6-1 against the Warriors. The two teams split their season series last year in Fremont, NE. Midland won the opener 4-2 before UMary came back to win game two 5-4 on February 8, 2025… UMary is 2-1 at Midland and 4-0 at home.  
 
LAST TIME OUT
#11 UMary downed #7 Jamestown 3-2 on the road Wednesday, December 3. After a scoreless 1st period, Palmer Sinclair and Joe Gronholz found the net in the 2nd period. Jamestown scored with one second on the clock in the middle period to enter the third down 2-1. The two teams both scored in the third. Dain Sardelli scored first for UMary for a 3-1 lead before the Jimmies pulled back within a goal. Caleb Cross was stellar in goal, making 39 saves. Amraj Gill assisted on the 1st and 3rd UMary goals. Only one penalty was called on each team, resulting in a power play goal for both teams. UJ also scored shorthanded.  
 
MARAUDERS JUMP TO #11
Following four straight weeks at #12 in the polls, UMary has been ranked #11 in the last two polls, including the most recent rating released November 26. UMary was 14th in the preseason coaches' poll and remained 14th in the first two regular season rankings. The October 29 poll was the last coaches' ranking of the season. Computerized rankings started November 5 and continue into February. The computerized rankings determine the 18 squads who will join the six teams earning automatic qualifying bids to form the 24-team ACHA MD1 national championship tournament field and compete for the title in Centene, MO, in March.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Alex Senf is off to a blazing start. In the course of 19 games the 2nd year forward leads the Marauders with ten goals. He is second on the squad in points with 19 (10g 9a).
  •  The 2024-25 Midwest College Hockey Rookie of the Year and all-conference forward is having another impressive season. Joe Gronholz is tied for the team lead in assists (13) and leads in points (21). He has eight goals, including a team-best three power play goals.  
  • In his first season at UMary Dain Sardelli leads UMary with four game-winning goals. He is fourth on the team in  goals (7) and third in assists (9) and points (16).
  • David Loahr has eight goals already this season to go with eight assists for 16 points. He scored six goals last year in 36 games, his first season at UMary.
  • Matt Scribner has been an offensive force for the Marauders on the blue line this season. He is tied with Gonholz for the team lead in assists (13) and has three goals. His 16 points lead the Marauders defensive unit.
  • Right behind Scribner in scoring by defensemen is Amraj Gill. In his first season at UMary Gill owns four goals and eight assists for 12 points.
  • Limited to just 13 games this season, Michael Heitkamp, an ACHA MD1 All-Athletic 3rd team selection as a defenseman in 2024-25, has two goals and eight assists for 10 points.
  • Isaac Flatley has also found success in his first season at UMary. The forward owns five goals and eight assists for 13 points.
  • Hunter Mangan owns six goals and six assists for 12 points. The second year forward has scored on the power play and shorthanded, one of four Marauders who has done so.
 
BIG WINS
The Marauders earned the 250th win in program history November 22 in the 5-4 win over West Chester University of Pennsylvania… With the Marauders win over the Jimmies on December 3, Head Coach Dan Huntley owns 251 coaching wins at UMary and 347 collegiate coaching wins overall.   
 
TIMING
First-year forward Dain Sardelli has had perfect timing, scoring the game-winning goal in four different games this season, a team-high. He was credited with the game-winner in victories over Lake Region State (9-1), Colorado (4-2) at Purdue Northwest (3-1) and at Jamestown (3-2). He is the only UMary player with multiple game-winners.  
 
SHARE THE LOAD
Fifteen Marauders have scored goals this season and 14 have at least two goals. Additionally 21 Marauders have an assist.
 
NET GAINS
Zane Clausen and Caleb Cross, both in their second seasons at UMary, have split time in the net for the Marauders this season. Clausen has played eight games and owns a 4-3 record with a 2.68 goals against average and a 91.7 save percentage. Cross is 8-3 with a 2.55 GAA and a 92.12 SV%.
 
NEW
On a veteran team with 21 returning players, four new skaters have taken to the ice this season for the Marauders: defensemen John Lang and Amraj Gill and forwards Dain Sardelli and Isaac Flatley. 
 
SPECIALTY UNITS
The Marauders have scored 13 goals on 64 power play opportunities (20.3%)… UMary has allowed opponents to score 12 times on 64 opportunities (82.8% penalty kill %)… UMary has a 4-1 edge in shorthanded goals. Hunter Mangan, Isaac Flatley, David Loahr and Joe Gronholz all have scored while the Marauders have skated shorthanded. UMary hadn't allowed a shorthanded goal until December 3 in the 23rd game of the season.
 
MARAUDERS PICKED 3RD IN MCH PRESEASON POLL
Midwest College Hockey coaches project the University of Mary to finish third this season in the seven-team league.
 
Defending league champion Minot State University tops the 2025-26 MCH Preseason Coaches' Poll, released September 24. The University of Jamestown is picked second, followed by UMary, Midland University, McKendree, Waldorf University and Iowa State University.
 
All seven teams will compete in the MCH conference tournament February 20-22 in Albert Lea, MN. The MCH Playoff champion will hoist the Lindsay Cup and earn a berth in the 2026 American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 1 national championships set for March 12-17 in Maryland Heights, MO.
 
UMary opens its 12-game 2025-26 MCH schedule at Waldorf on Oct. 18-19 in Mason City, IA.
 
RANK AND FILE
In a schedule chock full of the top teams in the country, the Marauders play 27 games of their scheduled 38 contest against teams ranked in the Top 25 preseason poll. UMary faces #3 Minot State (5 games), #6 Jamestown (5), #9 Drury (2), #10 Utah (1), #11 Calvin (1), #15 Purdue-Northwestern (1), #18 Midland (4), #21 Arizona State (2), #21 Delaware (1), #23 Grand Valley State (1) and #25 Colorado (4).
 
2024-25 REWIND
The Marauders finished last season 23-15-0-0-0-0 overall and 22-15-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams.
 
HISTORY LESSON
UMary, which won back-to-back ACHA Men's Division II national championships in 2020 and 2021, made the move up to MD1 for the 2022-23 season. Head Coach Dan Huntley has directed the incredibly successful UMary program since the Marauders first took to the ice in September 2018. Over the course of seven seasons UMary has fashioned a record of 239-56-9-11-2-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL), posting a winning season with 20 or more wins each year.
 
The Marauders made their second straight MD1 national tournament last spring and went 1-1, defeating the University of Pittsburgh 4-0 in the opening round before falling to #3 Ohio University 3-0. Throughout program history covering six national tournaments, the Marauders are 14-2-1-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) in ACHA tournament games and has only two losses in regulation.  
 
HEITKAMP, GRONHOLZ, CUNNINGHAM LEAD VETERAN SQUAD
The Marauders return an experienced club as 21 of 25 players return from last season.
 
Michael Heitkamp leads the way for the Marauders returners. The two-way defenseman from Grand Rapids, MN, was a threat on both ends of the rink for UMary. In his second season with the Marauders and fourth overall in ACHA MD1, Heitkamp scored 15 goals and delivered 15 assists for 30 points to earn a spot on the 2024-25 ACHA MD1 All-Athletic 3rd team. Heitkamp is the first UMary player to claim ACHA MD1 All-Athletic Status.
 
Heitkamp was also an All-Midwest College Hockey selection. Forward Joe Gronholz was the MCH Rookie of the Year and a 2nd team All-MCH choice. Defenseman Dylan Cunningham and Gronholz were both named to the MCH All-Rookie team.
