BISMARCK, ND – Meeting a crosstown foe for the first time in over three decades,
Tshawn Bois registered his first double double of the season and
Noah Thomas and
Cayden Redfield delivered from downtown as the University of Mary men's basketball team claimed a 99-67 non-conference win over Bismarck State College in a Capitol City clash.
This is the first regular season meeting between the Marauders (5-8 overall) and the Mystics (0-12) since the 1981-82 season. With Bismarck State moving to four-year play with membership in the NAIA this year, NCAA Division II member UMary was able to once again able to add the Mystics to the Marauders schedule.
Bois led the Marauders with 19 points and ten rebounds. The junior guard from Quebec, Canada, knocked down 6-of-10 shots and made a pair of treys as he tied his season-best mark for points and established a new rebounding high. Bois had twice just missed reaching double figures in both points and rebounds in a single game by a single board.
Thomas and Redfield gave the Marauders a huge spark off the bench. The duo combined for 33 points and eight treys in just 37 minutes of action.
Thomas finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes. He went 4-for-9 behind the arc as UMary sank a season-high 16 triples.
Redfield was on point all game. The senior guard drained four treys in just five attempts and made 6-of-9 shots overall. He also had seven boards, three blocks and two steals.
Tamarrein Henderson was also incredible efficient, scoring 14 points on eight shots. He was 2-for-3 behind the arc and made 5-of-8 shots overall while also grabbing five rebounds.
Andre Austin was the fifth UMary player in double figures. The freshman guard posted 10 points and led the squad with six assists. He also had seven rebounds.
Overall ten Marauders found their way into the scoring column as UMary shot 48% overall for the game and went 16-for-36 on 3s, including an 11-for-16 2
nd half effort from behind the arc. Under constant defensive pressure by UMary all game, BSC shot just 35.3% from the floor overall with a 5-for-20 mark behind the line.
The Marauders, who never trailed in the game, saw an early 10-point lead shrink to 28-22 before a pair of treys by Henderson capped a 10-point run for a 38-22 lead.
UMary entered intermission leading 45-35 but came out for the second half on fire to take control of the game with a 23-6 run for a 68-41 advantage. The Marauders eventually grew their lead to 35 points at 91-56 on a trey by Thomas.
The win is the fifth of the season for UMary, matching the Marauders total from last season with at least 13 games left to play.
The Marauders jump back into Northern Sun play with a visit to Minot State University on Saturday, January 3. Game time is 3:30 pm.
