Second period surge sends #11 Marauders past #7 Jimmies 3-2

JAMESTOWN, ND – A pair of second period goals and a strong night in net by Caleb Cross pushed #11 University of Mary to a 3-2 road win over #7 University of Jamestown, the second straight big in-state win and Midwest College Hockey victory for the Marauders.

The last time UMary played a game inside North Dakota, the Marauders earned a 2-1 win at home over #3 Minot State University on November 8.

Additionally the Marauders pull even in the season's Jug Series against the Jimmies as both teams now have a victory in the 5-game series.

The victory is the 251st in program history. In addition to his 251 wins leading the Marauders, the victory is the 347th collegiate coaching win for UMary head coach Dan Huntley.

UMary improves to 12-6-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 11-6-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 4-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH play (12 points). Additionally the Marauders are 9-6-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally ranked teams. The Jimmies are 12-10-1-0-0-0 overall and 3-4-1-0-0-0 (11 points) in MCH play.

Goaltenders took center stage in the first period as the two netminders turned aside a combined 29 shots with Cross stopping 18. Taking advantage of their home ice, the Jimmies held an 18-11 edge in shots in a free-flowing first period in which no penalties were whistled and no goals were scored.

Palmer Sinclair opened the scoring at 12:58 of the second period. With Amraj Gill controlling the puck atop the right point, Sinclair moved from just outside the crease into the slot. Gill unleashed a long shot. Sinclair was able to get his stick on the puck and redirect the shot into the net.

Joe Gronholz doubled the Marauders advantage to 2-0 just under four minutes later. Taking a faceoff to the right of the Jamestown goal, Alex Senf won the draw and pulled the puck back to Gronholz. The reigning Midwest College Hockey Rookie of the Year snapped off a quick shot from inside the top of the circle that eluded Jimmies goalie Brandon Weare. It was the 8th goal of the season for Gronholz.

A 5-minute major and game misconduct called on the Jimmies Raymond Warrack for butt-ending with 2:09 left in the second period provided the Marauders an incredible opportunity to extend their lead. Instead it was Jamestown that took advantage first when Kaelan Shelton scored shorthanded with one second left in the second period, pulling the Jimmies within 2-1 entering the final period.

The Marauders finally took advantage of the major penalty at 1:56 of the third period. Taking a cross-ice pass from Gill, Dain Sardelli ripped a one-timer from the middle of the right circle past Weare for a power play goal and a 3-1 lead.

Taking advantage of a UMary penalty, Trey Stephenson scored a power play goal for Jamestown at 5:02 to close the Marauders lead to one goal.

Caleb Cross and an aggressive UMary defense held Jamestown's attack at bay the rest of the game to clinch the win.

Cross finished the game with 39 saves, including 12 in the second period and 11 in the third. Weare stopped 30 shots.

Only two penalties were called in the game, leading to power play goals for each team.

UMary now heads to Midland University for a 2-game Midwest College Hockey series on December 5-6. Friday's game is 8 pm with Saturday's start time at 7 pm in Fremont, NE.
