MITCHELL, SD - Two freshmen shined at the DWU Open as Kale Baumann and Jacob Strausbaugh, both wrestling unattached, won their respective weight classes. The University of Mary wrestling team had seven wrestlers place at the tournament.

Kale Baumann (unattached) won the 157-pound weight class in impressive fashion. Baumann began his day by pinning Ryan Hrcka (Minot State) at the 6:16 mark. He then took down Ty Saulter (Augustana) by an 11-3 major decision. Baumann punched his ticket to the final after earning decision wins over Brandon Paredes (Chadron State) and Logan Butzon (Augustana). The Great Falls, MT, native won his weight class when he scored a late reversal and a two-point near fall to defeat Kaden Nicolas (Augustana) by a 9-7 decision.

Jacob Strausbaugh (unattached) took gold at 133 pounds, dominating the competition. Strausbaugh won his first match by pinning Owen Elsasser (Wayne State College) at the 2:01 mark. He then won by a 16-7 major decision over Teagan Block (Northern State). Strausbaugh won his quarterfinal match by a 16-0 tech fall over Cole Faircloth (Minot State). He would take a 12-9 decision victory over Hunter Jacobsen (Chadron State) in the semifinals. Strausbaugh showcased his skills in the championship match, defeating Clay Gates (Northern State) by a 16-0 tech fall.

Claiming top five finishes for UMary at the DWU Open:

Mason Gutenberger finished runner-up at 125 pounds. Gutenberger went 4-1 on the day, losing only to #14 Quade Smith (Chadron State) in the finals by a 4-0 decision.

Lane Ewing finished second at 165 pounds. He went 5-1 at the DWU Open, falling to #15 Payton Handevidt (Augustana) in the finals.

Michael Murillo went 4-1 to take bronze at 197 pounds. Murillo finished with three tech falls and one major decision victory.

Ben DeForest placed third in the 133-pound weight, going 5-1 at the tournament.
