ROMEOVILLE, IL – In a game featuring major momentum shifts,
Hunter Mangan delivered #11 University of Mary a 5-4 victory over #22 West Chester University of Pennsylvania on the final day of the Chicago Classic.
Mangan made sure the Marauders would leave the Windy City on a high note as UMary experienced a pair of heartbreaking decisions in the first two games of the Chicago Classic, falling in a shootout on day one before allowing the winning goal with 83 seconds left in regulation on day two.
UMary improves to 11-6-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 10-6-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 3-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH play. Additionally the Marauders are 8-6-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally-ranked teams. West Chester is 9-6-0-0-0-0.
The Golden Rams needed just 58 seconds to score the opening goal of the game. But just a short time later, the momentum turned towards the Marauders as UMary scored three times in the first period.
Joe Gronholz tied the game for UMary at 6:20 with the Marauders taking their first lead of the day at 11:31 on a goal by
Dain Sardelli. Taking advantage of a West Chester penalty with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period, Gronholz scored a power play goal with 14 seconds left before intermission.
The Marauders came out strong in the second period as a
Nick Bradshaw pushed the UMary advantage to 4-1 on a goal at the 6:32 mark.
The game took a savage shift towards the Golden Rams a few minutes later with West Chester scoring two goals in the second before tying the game 62 seconds into the third period.
Forced to kill off a power play opportunity midway through the final period, the Marauders regained the momentum on Mangan's game-winning goal at 14:53. Mangan took advantage of assists from
Lyndon Orr and
Palmer Sinclair to score his sixth goal of the season and first game-winner.
Gronholz finished the day with two goals and an assist.
Isaac Flatley,
Will Falconer and
Matt Scribner all had two assists.
The Marauders held a 36-27 edge in shots for the game, including a 20-6 advantage in the first period. The pendulum swung the other way in the second as West Chester held a 14-9 shot advantage. Both teams took seven shots in the third.
UMary finished 1-for-3 on the power play while West Chester was unable to find a goal on three opportunities with a man advantage.
The Marauders next visit #9 University of Jamestown on Wednesday, December 3.
