ROMEOVILLE, IL – For the second straight day at the Chicago Classic, #11 University of Mary suffered a narrow setback. After the Marauders were edged Thursday in a shootout, #17 University of Utah scored with 83 seconds left in regulation to derail UMary's comeback hopes 3-2 on Friday.
Trailing by two goals after two periods, the Marauders pulled even in the third before the Skatin' Utes tallied for a third time with the specter of overtime looming.
UMary is 10-6-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 9-6-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 3-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH play. Additionally the Marauders are 7-6-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally-ranked teams. Utah is 8-6-0-1-0-0.
Utah came out fast in the first period, firing off 15 shots to nine for UMary.
Caleb Cross stood firm in net for the Marauders and turned aside all scoring threats by the Skatin' Utes.
Shortly after killing off a UMary power play opportunity that carried over from late in the first period, Utah opened the scoring at 2:18 of the second period when Gion Coray discovered the back of the net for a 1-0 Skatin' Utes lead. Playing its first game of the weekend, Utah scored again at 16:19 to double the UMary deficit to 2-0.
Alex Senf, scoring for the second straight day, found the net first for the Marauders when he scored his team-high 10
th goal of the season at 6:41 of the third.
Joe Gronholz and
Lyndon Orr delivered the assists. It was the Marauders fourth power play opportunity of the game.
UMary pulled even at 2-2 when
David Loahr knocked in his 8
th goal of the season at 14:16.
Amraj Gill picked up the assist.
Coray earned the win for Utah with his second goal of the day at 18:37 when he scored on a power play opportunity. Coray also assisted on Utah's middle goal.
Cross finished the game with 33 saves. Joseph Greilich turned aside 30 shots for Utah.
UMary scored once on four power play opportunities. Utah was 1-for-2 with a man advantage.
The Marauders wrap up the Chicago Classic on Saturday, November 22, with a 12:30 pm meeting against #22 West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
