Senf, Scribner goals not enough for #11 UMary in shootout loss to Delaware

ROMEOVILLE, IL – Forced to play overtime for the first time this season despite bookend goals by Alex Senf and Matt Scribner, #11 University of Mary suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to the University of Delaware to open the ACHA MD1 Chicago Classic.

UMary is 10-5-0-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 9-5-0-0-0-1 against ACHA MD1 teams and 3-2-0-0-0-0 in MCH play. Additionally the Marauders are 7-5-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally-ranked teams. The Blue Hens are 8-7-0-0-1-0.

In the first of three games in three days for the Marauders at the Chicago Classic, Senf opened the scoring with his team-leading 9th goal of the season just 2:01 into the game with Joe Gronholz and David Loahr providing the help.

Despite a 25-14 edge in total shots over the course of the first and second periods and three power play opportunities, the Marauders were unable to extend their one-goal advantage.

Delaware found the equalizer just 32 seconds into the third period before taking its first lead of the day at on a Tanner Mahoney goal at 8:02.

Scribner then tied the game for UMary at 12:34, the third goal of the season for the Marauders defenseman with Dain Sardelli and Hunter Mangan earning assists.

Despite three shots on goal for each team, neither team could find the net in overtime to send the contest to a shootout. After neither team scored in the first two rounds of the shootout, the third time was the charm as Scribner and Mahoney both tallied. Round four decided the game as Kade Cochlan scored for Delaware while the Marauders were denied.

Neither team was able to score on the power play in a combined 10 attempts, four of them by the Marauders.

Zane Clausen made 25 saves for UMary with Jacob Snellenburg turning aside 33 shots for Delaware.
