CHADRON, NE – A late basket sank the University of Mary's hopes for a road victory as Chadron State College rallied to claim an 83-82 win over the visiting Marauders. In a game that featured 12 ties and 16 lead changes, the Eagles drained a trey with nine seconds left in the game for Chadron State's first lead in nearly eight minutes.
Six players scored in double digits for the Marauders and all ten players who saw action for UMary produced at least one basket.
Kelton Coleman, Rejla Nagulic and
Tshawn Bois all contributed 13 points in the game.
Jackson Ware and
Tamarrein Henderson scored 11 each and
Andre Austin added 10.
In an afternoon non-conference matinee where the largest lead of the day was a 7-point advantage in the first half by the home team, the Marauders used a 7-0 run to claim a 72-67 lead with 7:02 to play. Nagulic opened the surge with a layup before Austin and Bois followed with back-to-back treys. UMary would eventually go ahead 76-70 on a
Noah Thomas basket, the Marauders largest lead of the day.
The Eagles pulled even at 78-78 with just over two minutes remaining before
Cayden Redfield drove the baseline to spin and score to regain the lead for the Marauders. An Austin free throw followed at 1:22 for an 81-78 lead. After a basket by the Eagles, Coleman followed with another free throw for an 82-80 advantage with 23 seconds remaining.
Zach Smith, taking his only shot of the game, responded with a three-pointer to win the game for the Eagles.
UMary (0-3 overall) had a final chance but Coleman's attempt to score in the lane was physically disrupted by the CSC (1-2 overall) defender before a blocked shot was credited. A last second desperation heave by Redfield was deflected to preserve a win for the Eagles.
Coleman just missed a double double as he hauled down nine rebounds. He also led UMary with four assists and two steals.
Henderson and Bois both made three treys while Austin was 2-for-2 behind the arc.
Jadon Cool lead all players with 22 points for Chadron State. Luka Djurovic had 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Marauders shot 41.4% from the floor and made 11-of-33 treys. The Eagles made 47% of their shots in the game and went 9-of-24 from behind the arc. Both teams had 42 rebounds while UMary turned the ball over one more time than CSC 13-12.
After playing three times on the road to start the season, UMary now returns home for four straight home games. The Marauders first appearance at the McDowell Activity Center is slated for Tuesday, November 25, when UMary opens Northern Sun play against Minot State University. Tip-off is 7:30 pm.
