SIOUX FALLS, SD – Big-time performances by
Bergan Kinnebrew and
Emily Jaenke, as well as clutch defensive plays late, helped keep the University of Mary women's basketball team (5-0) undefeated as the Marauders took down Missouri Southern State University (1-1) 76-73.
With UMary trailing 71-70 with 5:10 remaining in the game, Kinnebrew gave the Marauders a lead after she converted a left-handed layup off the glass. Free throws from Jaenke extended the Marauders lead to 74-71 with just 2:19 remaining.
The Lions made it a one-point game when Makenna Yokley made a layup with 1:16 remaining. With the lead on the line,
Allison Undlin made a crucial block in the paint, and Kinnebrew grabbed the rebound with 36 seconds left.
Kinnebrew knocked down two free throws to give UMary a 76-73 lead with just nine seconds left. The Lions attempted a three to tie the game, but
Anna Lenzen came up with an impressive block to secure the 76-73 victory for the Marauders.
Kinnebrew scored 32 points, shooting 9-of-12 from the field and 13-of-14 from the free throw line. The Bismarck, ND, native also produced nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.
Jaenke exploded for 22 points off the bench, going 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
Allison Undlin recorded eight rebounds, seven points, and three blocks. Lenzen posted six points and two blocks.
UMary shot 24-of-48 (50%) from the field and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from three, while MSSU went 24-of-55 (43.6%) from the field and 3-of-10 (30%) from behind the arc.
Fouls played a major role in the game as both teams shot a combined 52 free throws. The Marauders shot 20-of-24 (83.3%) from the free-throw line, while the Lions went 22-of-28 (78.6%) from the charity stripe. UMary dominated the glass, outrebounding MSSU 35-25.
The Marauders had difficulty keeping possession as they turned it over 25 times. The Lions committed 16 turnovers.
UMary trailed the Lions 24-16 at the end of the first quarter, as MSSU scored nine points off Marauder turnovers. UMary cut the lead to 35-32 heading into halftime.
The Marauders took a 59-55 lead at the end of the third quarter after Jaenke scored 11 points in the period. The fourth quarter went back and forth with both teams holding leads late, but UMary managed to come out on top.
The Marauders host their first home game of the season against Dickinson State University in the McDowell Activity Center on Tuesday, November 18, at 6 pm.
