Gronholz, Cross help #14 Marauders complete weekend sweep of #21 Sun Devils

MANDAN, ND – Joe Gronholz delivered a second straight weekend sweep for #14 University of Mary with a 3rd period goal as the Marauders rallied once again to earn a 2-1 win over #21 Arizona State University. The Sun Devils scored first but the Marauders tallied the next two to extend the UMary win streak to four games.

This is the fourth time in UMary's five wins that the Marauders opponent scored first.

The Marauders, who defeated the Sun Devils 5-2 on Thursday, improve to 5-2-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 4-2-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams. The Sun Devils are 0-3-0-0-0-0.

For the second straight game it was the Sun Devils who scored first. Ben Chase, camped in front of the Marauders net, deflected a long shot from atop the right circle into the goal just 2:24 into the second period.

The Marauders didn't wait long to find the equalizer. Firing the puck from his defensive zone, Amraj Gill connected with Michael Heitkamp in front of the Marauders bench to create a 2-on-1. Dain Sardelli, flying down the left side of the slot with Heitkamp carrying the puck into the right circle, took the feed on the tape and ripped a wrister inside the left post past ASU goaltender Hayden Manning. Sardelli's goal at 6:47 of the second period was his third goal of the season.

Gronholz delivered the game-winner at 7:44 of the third period. With time running down on the Marauders fifth power play of the game, Matt Scribner carried the puck down the ice before leaving it for Gronholz just inside the blue line. Skating towards the net with Sun Devils defenders giving way, Gronholz unleased a withering shot from the top of the slot by the right circle that snuck inside the left crossbar.

Caleb Cross and the Marauders defense kept the Sun Devils in check the rest of the game to complete the sweep. Cross stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced in the game to extend UMary's win streak to four games. Manning finished with 41 saves for Arizona State.

After opening the season with seven straight home games, the Marauders play their next six on the road. First stop is a meeting with Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, IN, on Saturday, Oct. 12. UMary follows with games at Grand Valley State University (Tuesday, Oct. 14) and Calvin University (Wednesday, Oct. 15).
