JAMESTOWN, ND – Controlling every facet of the game in a dominant opening half, the University of Mary steamrolled the University of Jamestown 44-22. Special teams, defense and offense all clicked for the Marauders in the first two quarters as UMary led 27-0 at intermission on the way to ruining homecoming for the Jimmies.
This was the first Northern Sun meeting between the Marauders (3-3 overall, 2-3 Northern Sun, 1-1 NSIC North) and the Jimmies (1-4, 1-4, 0-1). It was also the first time UMary and Jamestown played a conference game of any sort since 2004 when both programs competed in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10). 2004 was also the last time the Marauders and Jimmies faced off in Jamestown.
UMary generated 32 first downs and picked up 177 yards rushing, 346 passing and 523 total yards. The total yards and first downs are season-highs for the Marauders.
Defensively the Marauders limited to 279 yards, including only 74 on the ground. This is the fourth time in six games UMary's defense held an opponent to under 300 yards total and less than 80 on the ground.
The Marauders ran the first 16 plays of the game and led 14-0 before the Jimmies offense even took a snap in their homecoming game. Emannuel Cody gave UMary a quick energy jolt as he returned the opening kickoff 50 yards to the UJ 45 yard line. Nine plays later
Andrew Trandahl scored on a 2 yard run up the gut, his first of two touchdowns in the game.
UMary head coach
Shann Schillinger and the Marauders then stunned the Jimmies by both calling and perfectly executing an onside kick, recovered by UMary on the visitor's 46 yard line.
Ryan Blair quickly moved the Marauders down the field, opening the drive with completions of 20 yards to
Karsyn Jablonski and 19 yards to
Luke Bodine. Five plays later Jablonski hauled in a 1 yard TD pass from Blair for a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Blair added two more touchdown passes in the second quarter, locating Bodine on a 14 yard scoring pass before finding Jablonski for a 21 yard touchdown to claim a 27-0 lead at half.
UMary dominated the stat sheet in the first half. In addition to the scoreboard the Marauders held the edge in rushing yards (77-14), passing yards (246-30), total yards (323-44) and first downs (19-5).
The onslaught continued in the third quarter when UMary scored on its first possession of the second half.
Xavier Brackenridge rumbled into the end zone from 12 yards out for his first collegiate touchdown, capping a 44 yard drive and increasing the Marauders lead to 34-0.
A 28 yard field goal by Jack Henniger late in the third quarter and an 8 yard run by Trandahl in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring for UMary.
Blair passed for 341 yards and three scores and has now eclipsed 300 yards in all three of his starts this season. The graduate transfer completed 28-of-41 passes with no interceptions.
Jablonski hauled in nine passes for 103 yards and two scores. Bodine made eight catches for 89 yards and one touchdown.
Damani Wilks finished with five catches for 76 yards.
Brackenridge paced the UMary ground attack with 119 yards on 22 carries, scoring once. Trandahl gained eight yards and scored two touchdowns.
Tuakoi Mahe paced the Marauders with six tackles. He also broke up one pass.
Cameron Brusven had UMary's lone sack.
Mason Phillips and Christian Artega posted tackles for loss.
Cole Hentges led the Jimmies with 210 yards passing and two touchdown throws. He also ran for 31 yards and a score.
