Third period dooms #12 Marauders in Halloween loss at #2 Minot State

MINOT, ND – Facing their highest-ranked opponent of the season, #12 University of Mary played #2 Minot State University even through the first period but couldn't overcome a one-goal deficit after two as the visiting Marauders dropped a 5-1 decision to the Beavers in Midwest College Hockey play.

The Marauders, who have played ten games this season against teams ranked in the American College Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division 1 polls, are 9-4-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall, 8-4-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams and 2-1-0-0-0-0 in MCH play. Additionally the Marauders are 6-4-0-0-0-0 when playing nationally-ranked teams. Minot State, who defeated #1 University of Nevada-Las Vegas earlier this week, is 10-0-1-0-0-0 overall and 4-0-1-0-0-0 in MCH play.

The Beavers opened the scoring on a goal by Sheldin Howard just 6:18 into the game.

Taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play after Ben Johnson of the Beavers picked up a major penalty and MSU also was whistled for slashing, Amraj Gill played the puck diagonally from the right circle to Isaac Flatley, who was camped out to the left of the crease. Taking a perfect feed onto his stick blade, Flatley ripped home his shot into the wide-open backside of the net at 11:52 to even the game at 1-1.

Minot State regained the lead in the second on a long shot into traffic that was redirected into the net by Logan Cyca.

The Beavers broke open the game in the third. After a Jay Buchholz goal at 5:08 to give Minot State a 3-1 lead, the Beavers picked up another penalty. Looking to take advantage of the man advantage, the Marauders applied heavy pressure on the Beavers net but was repeatedly turned aside. UMary unleashed another flurry as the power play opportunity expired. With the Marauders attacking the net, the Beavers quickly countered with Colby Joseph scoring on a breakaway to seal the game for Minot State.

The Marauders held a 10-7 advantage in shots in the third period. The Beavers held a 34-32 advantage for the game.

UMary finished 1-for-5 on the power play as Minot State was whistled for seven penalties totaling 33 minutes. The Marauders committed four penalties for eight minutes. The Beavers scored once on four power play opportunities.

Zane Clausen made 29 saves for UMary. Will Dyke stopped 31 shots for Minot State.

The Marauders return home to host #6 University of Jamestown in the season-opening game in The Jug series between the I-94 rivals. Game time is 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
