MANDAN, ND – A commanding second period and a two-goal night by
Hunter Mangan lifted #14 University of Mary to a 5-2 win over #21 Arizona State University. In the first of two weekend meetings between the Marauders and the Sun Devils, UMary scored twice in the second period and pulled away with another two goals in the third.
Mangan, who broke a 1-1 tie with the first goal in the second period, added an empty net goal in the third to seal UMary's third straight win. All three consecutive wins for the Marauders have come at home against ranked opponents.
The Marauders improve to 4-2-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 3-2-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams. The Sun Devils are 0-1-0-0-0-0.
Down a goal after Arizona State found the net less than three minutes into the game,
Amraj Gill scored the equalizer for UMary. Floating alone inside the blue line at the top of the slot, Gill rifled a shot through traffic just inside the left post at 14:11, sending the game into the first intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
Mangan broke the tie at 12:18 of the second period. Camped just outside the crease, Mangan jammed home a rebound off a shot from
Isaac Flatley for a 2-1 UMary lead.
Just 41 seconds later, the Marauders lead jumped to 3-1 when
Will Falconer's shot from the top of the left circle hugged the ice and eluded a screened ASU goaltender Nate Glen for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Taking advantage of a power play opportunity, the Sun Devils closed within 3-2 at 8:54 of the third period. It took less than two minutes for the Marauders to regain their 2-goal lead as
Alex Senf delivered a back-handed goal from the right of the net at the 10:44 mark.
Mangan closed the door on the Sun Devils with his empty net goal at 18:27, 58 seconds after ASU pulled Glenn from the net.
Michael Heitkamp picked up a pair of assists in the game to join Mangan as the lone two Marauders with a multi-point game. Ten Marauders finished the game with either a goal or an assist.
Zane Clausen finished the night with 28 saves for UMary, including 12 in the final period. Glenn had 33 for ASU.
ASU finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play while UMary was 0-for-3 with a man advantage. Both teams were whistled for three penalties totaling six minutes aside.
The Marauders and Sun Devils finish their weekend series on Saturday, October 4. The puck drops at 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
