MASON CITY, IA –
Alex Senf jumpstarted a big day for the #14 University of Mary attack with a goal just 34 seconds into the Marauders first Midwest College Hockey games of the season. The Marauders scored three times in the first ten minutes of play, including two by Senf, as visiting UMary rolled over Waldorf University 7-3.
The Marauders are 8-3-0-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T-SOW-SOL) overall and 6-3-0-0-0-0 against ACHA MD1 teams. The Warriors are 4-5-0-0-0-0.
Carrying the puck out of the Marauders defensive zone, Senf gave the puck up in the neutral zone to
Joe Gronholz, who soon fed the puck back to Senf in the slot just outside the crease, where the Fargi, ND, native tapped the puck home for a quick lead.
Isaac Flatley doubled the Marauders lead at 8:06, driving by a defender in the right circle before cutting across the goal mouth and delivering a backhanded shot just inside the left post.
Just 74 seconds later Senf added his second goal of the game. Floating alone in the middle of the left circle, Senf one-timed a pass from Gronholz into the back of the net to send UMary into intermission leading 3-0.
The two teams lit the lamp three times each in an outrageous second period. Following a Waldorf goal at 3:02, the Marauders countered with two of their own with
Derek Dropik and
Lyndon Orr both scoring. Waldorf posted the next two goals to close within 5-3 before
David Loahr scored a shorthanded goal at 18:43 to send UMary into the second intermission with a 6-3 advantage.
A quiet third period featured just one goal when Orr tallied for a second time in the game at 16:04, sealing the Marauders win.
Caleb Cross turned aside 29 of the 32 shots he faced in the game. Matthew Loney, who entered the game after the Warriors starting goaltender Vaughn Holbeche was injured on the first goal of the day by UMary, had 26 saves in the game.
In addition to Senf and Orr, several other Marauders posted multiple points in the game. Loahr had a goal and two assists for a game-high three points. Gronholz and
Palmer Sinclair had two assists and Flatley had both a goal and an assist.
UMary was 0-for-3 on the power play while Waldorf converted 1-of-4 chances with an extra skater.
The Marauders and the Warriors close out their weekend series at 1:30 pm at the Mason City (IA) Arena.
